My mum has done it. She reckons it can be fiddly work from time to time. Better than some of the other surgeries she's done on rats, mind you.

Emma. You must be magic to be able to have them live for so long

I like the idea of the decrease in risk of tumours as I've heard that it is very common in rats and the increase in lifespan. 2 years is not enough but I guess I'll have to weigh up the positives against the negatives. I did work in a vets when I was younger an saw them castrating cats which was a pretty simple proceedure. I know rats are smaller but their manly parts look big enough really.
There are lists of recommended vets on fancy rats forums but also if you contact the national fancy rat society they have a list of recommended vets or if you get the breeder list and contact a breeder near you they will give you the contact details for the vets they use. When talking to the vet it helps to ask if they have done the procedure before (obviously ) and then the type of anesthetic they use. Isoflurane is the best for small animals but you may never need to go down this road.

Ha Ha. I thought they lived longer than two years though. The sign for the dumbo rats at pets at home says they live between 3-5 years?

Yeah but pets at home also told me that I could not mix dumbo and top eared rats because they were a different species......

The average lifespan for fancy rats in the uk is about 22 months although this incorporates pets shop and breeder rats in average studies. You do get them that reach 30 months or so but that is why they say 2 years is average lifespan.

Ah. My first 3 were from a breeder. My lone boy was from a pet shop. And i have no idea about my current two they were handed in to a pets at home as unwanted pets. Makes me a bit sad as my current guys are anything between 13 and 26 months. I hope closer to 13.

Averages are just averages anyway. There are averages for human lifespan but I don't go panicking about reaching it or getting closer to it

Yeah I'll ask when I go to my next show actually. They have one in Leeds every 2 months. I suspect they'll probably use the same one I do But last time I went with my robos I didn't feel like they knew what they were doing.
