Default Rabbits

Hi all,

We went out today and we came across a rabbit that my partner could just not walk away from. They wouldn’t let us have her (understandably!) without showing proof of a cage so we’ve got a 5ft one second hand for now. Also I know you’re normally meant to get them in pairs but they said this one was better alone as she fought with the last rabbit she was enclosed with.

My partner was young when he last owned rabbits and I have never owned a rabbit. Some things he can’t remember and other things I just don’t think are quite right.

She’s ever so friendly and is running around the house freely right now. Quite surprisingly she’s hit it off with our cat and I’ve never seen our cat so relaxed!

I just wondered if there was any advice anyone knows of suitable cage sizes, chew toys, general toys, food, litter and bedding.

Probably a lot to ask at once but I just want to purchase the right things first time.

Thanks!

If you have a look on the Forum you'll find a section called Other Pets. Maybe there are threads about rabbits you can look at till someone replies who knows about rabbits.

Sorry! I didn’t see that, I did look and thought this section would be okay, I must’ve just missed it.

It's very common for social animals who fight with their cagemates to be labelled "aggressive" and "needs to live alone" by pet shops, but in most cases it's simply a case of a bad match. A pair of same sex rabbits will usually fight once they reach maturity, especially if unneutered, so I would clarify with the pet shop exactly what happened when she was last housed with another rabbit. Rescues pair up neutered males with spayed females as they tend to do best that way. Rabbits need to be introduced carefully and gradually though and it would be best to ask on a rabbit forum about that.

I know this sounds crazy, and maybe it’s dumb. She’s got on so well with our cat, like really really well. They fell asleep cuddling each other.

Does it have to be a rabbit companion? Just our cat has always been nervous, she loves cuddles from both me and my partner but I think because of the place we rescued her from, she has always been afraid to be seen being cuddled by someone else. So she would never sit with us if we were in the same room.

This evening we were both in the room and she fell asleep with the rabbit, she wasn’t scared. She even meowed which we’ve never heard her do before! (I’d just fed and changed her water so definitely wasn’t hunger).

I’d be worried to get another rabbit as I’ve never seen the cat so happy and the rabbit seems to love her too. So is it okay for her companion to be a cat rather than another rabbit?
