I'm so frustrated
Its so annoying. I recently moved Nico (my campbells dwarf) into his new cage which is an ikea detolf. I had enough bedding to do 6-9 inches in most of it and my family is giving my so much hate. He is technically my sister's hamster as she wanted one but I learnt how to care for it and do most of the work. However, my parents like to through this back in my face and criticise me for everything I do with him and they're are no longer letting me put that much bedding in. I pay for his bedding myself but they don't care. I can handle the criticism but its really frustrating.

Re: I'm so frustrated
That must be a really difficult situation. Without going into the whys and wherefores of why there is so much grief, would it be an option to steer a middle path on the bedding issue? You could perhaps try 4 - 6 inches, and see how Nico gets on with that. (My dwarf has 4 inches and is perfectly content.) Is your sister still interested in looking after Nico? If so, perhaps you could look after him together, or take turns?

Re: I'm so frustrated
I am sorry to hear this. People can get very funny about the amount we do for hamsters. My OH grumbles away about it sometimes but then he just gets used to it
Giving you hate isn't very nice though. 6" of bedding is fine. I hope things settle down soon. Count to 10, try and keep off the subject a bit and don't react - just get on with looking after the hammy now and hopefully they'll soon calm down.
The comment I often get is - those hamsters get more attention than me!

Re: I'm so frustrated
Maybe you could find some photos of detolf set ups with deep bedding online to show to your parents. You could explain that deep bedding works out cheaper in the long run because in a cage the size of a detolf you probably only have to change it every six months.
Maybe you could pass on all you've learned about hamsters to your sister so you can look after the hamster together.
You see, you've done the research so you know how to look after a hamster but your parents may not be up to date with hamster care because an awful lot has changed over the years.
It would be nice if the hamster could become a family pet and try and appreciate that someone (your parents?) forked out for a detolf which is a top of the range hamster home.

Re: I'm so frustrated
I'm much calmer now, I was just letting off some steam. I see where they're coming from but it was frustrating at the time.

Re: I'm so frustrated
Glad things are settling down. If it's any consolation my OH still says - surely you have far too much substrate in there. And I explain it saves on substrate and cleaning and makes the hamster happy.
