Yes I think it can just as easily be a cold or similar and best thing is rest and fluids. Even a high temperature could be normal flu but isolating is best just in case. Best wishes.

Engel if you need toilet paper could you phone nearest supermarket and explain your situation and ask them to get some to you or put it to one side. They are supposed to now be limiting the numbers sold to each customer and will be getting new stocks xxx

Also, if anyone else is on here and housebound and stuck for things, please consider going on places like facebook and checking out your local community pages, people are trying to help those that need it. I know my local area are trying to help those that need it in this way.

There are so many illnesses and germs around, especially in late winter sushi_78. I'm holding thumbs for you guys that it is just a cold or normal flu.

Thank you LunaTheHamster 1 and Vierville for your concern. As the day goes by, my mum isn't developing a cough and she feels fine, so we are a little more relaxed, and hoping it is indeed something other than coronavirus. We are still being very careful - we're all in separate rooms with as little contact as possible. Apparently the average incubation period is 5 days, and it's been 7 days since the contact with the confirmed case, so every day the chance of her getting it is less. We won't be able to go out until next month though.

I'm going to try a little experiment with my three... I'll leave a spoon in each of their cages and see where they end up! Report back to follow!

Spoon thieves? Hmm, I might try that one day and see what happens, haha!

It is very strange, with things being shut down and the "social distancing" being implemented. Everyone feels super tense. In fact everyone feels so tense that I even feel uneasy at home. Even though we live in a normally quiet-ish spot, it feels quieter, almost like when the power goes out and you realize you miss the sound of the laundry and refrigerator. And there is a strange lack of "the end is nigh!!" preachers (at least on the news we have).

I don't want to sound callus, mean, or anything; I value life and personally I know some nice people who are from 80-100 years old and are extremely vulnerable to the coronavirus and also extremely vulnerable to any other virus, cold, flu, bacteria, or etc. I understand that the coronavirus is dangerous, and why places with large amounts of elderly and vulnerable should take many precautions. But, still, I feel like either there's some overreacting or I don't have the whole picture. Logically, from what little information I have, it feels like we're treating something akin to a slightly nastier new strain of the flu that gives vulnerable people pneumonia, which many other things can do, like some kind of black death zombie plague. Again, I feel like I am missing something, missing the why.

Why is everyone so tense? Are we all suddenly selective germaphobes, or is the thought of quarantine causing this tension?

Also, I wonder how long this will last? Will we still be in "social distancing" mode through the summer? The fall? Next year?

I hope all of your families stay happy and healthy. I hope those who need prescriptions can find the medicine they need and make a hamster-worthy stash. And I hope that we can band together to ensure that everyone gets the food and supplies they need.

~May our furry friends calm our hearts in these trying times.~

I think it is that this virus could kill millions of people if the social distancing wasn’t brought in. It is strange that it is only really serious for over 40s/50s and people with existing health conditions, but that is an awful lot of the population. They need to try and stop it spreading and slow it down so the health service can cope with the numbers of people who are seriously ill until a vaccine is produced.

It is a very strange and hard time for everyone and I can completely understand how you feel. We sometimes have moments of thinking it is all unreal. But in a way we are lucky that we have had so many freedoms since the end of the Second World War. And I try and remember that if it wasn’t for those people who died in that war or survived it - we wouldn’t have had this free country all this time.

I have never known anything like this. If you look at other countries it is a very serious thing.

I think the social distancing is less important for younger people providing they then avoid the people at risk and that is the problem - it spreads and people come into contact with each other.

We can only hope that this is a short term measure to stop the virus in its tracks and slow things down.

It is probably better not to know too much and just accept it is a very serious world epidemic. We need to ensure things don’t get as bad as they are in Italy - too many people for the hospitals to treat. I am sure they will be working on treatments.

What is happening here now is what they did in China and things are starting to get better there now so although it’s a tough time it is better than not doing it and having a worse tough time for a much longer time - if that makes sense.

Have you ever read “The day of the triffids”? . It’s fiction but it describes the kind of apocalyptic scenario when something can’t be stopped until they find a solution.

Here in NY they are taking it very seriously; as they should. We have confirmed cases here and there is a lockdown. My husband is Italian; we came back to the US a few years ago after living there near his family for over a decade. Right now, we have lost family members and we can't get any info on my mother-in-law but we know she's not in her home. The relatives we know that have died from the virus most assuredly were in contact with my mother-in-law. This happened very, very quickly. We talked to them only a few weeks ago; some days before Italy had lost close to 1000 people and quickly escalating.

My son and I go to College here in NY; I'm 50 with diabetes while he's healthy and 21. Some professors had the attitude that this was overcautious; other's have gotten sick with low-grade symptoms. If my son got sick; it would be spread here at home. I am a high risk person. My daughter has severe asthma and I am most worried about her being here at home with us. All of our neighbors are over 70 and many even older on our street. Our area has even run out of test kits and just being told to stay in quarantine.

This is only the beginning; we can learn from the other countries while still learning more of this virus. There is no escaping the same outcomes simply because we are Americans if there are no different variables. This is simple math and science. Our statistics are already showing a slower rate then other countries by beginning earlier. That means we will go through it longer but maybe we can get a better outcome.

I hope everyone stays safe and keeping low in stress. All the best thoughts to your families as well.
