Exclamation Mouse in room!!

Hey guys!! recently i have needed to catch a mouse, I have two cats in my house and donít want to end up giving the little guy to them accidentally. But I also donít want a nest of mice running around!! I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of anti-kill mouse traps? Some of us are probably quite good at catching hamsters so thought i could get some good ideas

Bucket method? Ladder or steps leading up to the rim, food at the bottom. Mouse falls in and can't get back out

@Engel and @LunaTheHamster1
This is a great method but I’m always so unsure of the size of bucket! I’ve heard mice can jump very Hight and I’m not too sure how big I’d need it... or if I can get that!

Yes mice can pass on nasty diseases to hamsters. One in particular - can't remember the name. So you need to protect the hamster. Is your hamster in a tank or a cage? Mice can get through bars bigger than 7mm. I had a similar issue at our last house - we were always getting mice. I had to have the hamster in a cage with 7mm bar spacing.

This may not sound popular but I think you need to kill the mice, not catch them. They breed fast and there is never just one mouse. With mousetraps you will probably catch quite a few. We used two types that did the trick. Both of which would also kill a hamster so you need to make sure your hamster cage is very secure or move it to another room.

One was an electronic trap that was quite expensive. But these worked very well. The mice die either in or very close to the trap which means you know where they are and can remove them (rather than them dying underneath something and smelling or being found by another pet and eaten).

Mice are immune to most poisons now, but not this one. It sedates them instantly and they die under sedation so it's perhaps less cruel than most other mice traps. The poison is well enclosed inside the plastic box and is solid so it can't fall out or be touched so safer if there are children around. The entrance hole is not that big but it's possible a hamster could get in it so important to keep the hamster safe.

However within a few days you should have caught and disposed of a family or two of mice and everything be safe again.

You get two of these traps in a box. I would get two packs (ie four traps) - they sit up against a skirting board so put them on the route you think the mice have taken.

I tried all kinds of mouse traps including the humane ones (which aren't that humane as they sometimes die of fright before you set them free). The traditional little nipper ones were truly grim and not that humane either. So we settled for these - quick and simple. It is not pleasant finding dead mice but better than a dead hamster. They're wild mice so carry diseases. And they chew through electrical wires in the wall as well!

This is the other one we used effectively. Takes large batteries. You smear a bit of chocolate spread at the end (chocolate spread works best) and turn it on before going to bed. The mice are instantly zapped when they walk in so it's fairly humane. It can also catch quite a few as it's big enough to catch a rat. You don't have to look at or handle them - just tip it out.

If you do decide to catch them in a bucket or humane mouse trap you need to set them free at least a mile from your house or they come back! Homing thing. I'm afraid I couldn't handle doing that at 6 am every morning - taking mice for a ride for a mile.

You just need to be methodical about it for a few days and keep the cats and hamster away. But if you really think it's too risky there are these. I didn't like them - the mice also got clever and learned how to get the bait without getting caught! I'm sure one of them held the door open while the other got the bait - but they got wise to them. Those are the ones where they can die of fright if not let out of them soon enough (hence getting up at 6am and driving a mile to let them out) and you may have a few to transport!

If you want to try the bucket trap - use one of those tall kitchen bins instead of a bucket. They can't jump out of that as it's too high.

Personally I'd get the sealed rentokil traps and leave them down a week. But if you're worried about the cats finding a dead one before you do and eating it, then I'd go with the electronic one.
