Default Bugs in the Cage?!

Ok, so last night I was sitting by Buttercups cage when I saw a bug crawling through the bedding. It was just an earwig, but I was freaking out (I have a phobia of bugs). I'm pretty sure I squished it, but I didn't find its body so there's always a chance. I was wondering if earwigs could be potentially harmful to hamsters? Is this something I should be concerned about? I'm not sure where it came from- If it crawled in the cage from outside or if it came in with the bedding or something. What should I do about this?

I have no idea where it came from but my thinking is if there is one, there are more. I would discard all bedding, get a new bag and start over. I too have a profound disgust for bugs !

Check the food also.

I think the earwig fell into your hamster's habitat and got eaten by your hamster. Hamsters would probably have them for breakfast in the wilds so personally, i wouldn't worry.

You could get a family member or friend to check the substrate to se if there's anymore wee beasties about but i doubt it.

How is Buttercup?

Buttercup's doing really well. She's been up and foraging and she's letting me hold her a bit! I'll keep an eye out for any more bugs, but its such a relief to know that its nothing harmful to her.

I always freeze food and bedding up to 48hrs (leave it to thaw for 24hrs) then use. In the wild they have a variety of bugs to eat so I doubt earwigs will cause an issue.

I add mealworms and shrimp to my hamsters diet to boost protein so I wouldn't worry about it
