Hamsters in Cornwall
Hello.
After a hamster I got from pets and home passed away very quickly after getting her and your guys advise about getting from a trusted breeder or source.
I went on a hunt in cornwall, which other than pets at home isn't easy to find a hammy.
Upon speaking to them I have found out Fields pet centre in st Austell have beeb buying off the same people for 40 years
May come in handy for others struggling to find somewhere

Re: Hamsters in Cornwall
Unfortunately that doesn’t necessarily mean their hamsters are from an ethical breeder its very hard to find good breeders here. I don’t think we actually have any tbh
I stick to adopting and rescuing hammies now

Re: Hamsters in Cornwall
I still think it's encouraging they have used the same breeder for 40 years, and a very useful tip for anyone looking for hamsters from a smaller pet store. Our last Syrian came from a local pet shop and they also had their own breeder who supplied hamsters for both their shops - he was huge and always healthy I doubt they were as good as NHC breeders re genetics etc, but a big improvement from the type of breeding practices the suppliers to major pet stores use.

Re: Hamsters in Cornwall
When I spoke to them it sounded good they obviously dont have a constant stock like the big chains but I'd be happy to wait. They said they handle/play with them daily ( I think that ls a good sign isn't it?)
Also I was reading another thread I have the savic hamster heaven how often should I deep clean this?

Re: Hamsters in Cornwall
That does sound pretty good tbh, I might have to check out their store soon.
I’d fully clean the HH every 6 - 8 weeks for a syrian (leaving a little of the old substrate for a familiar smell) and weekly spot cleans

Re: Hamsters in Cornwall
Wow not very often to fully dismantle then. Thought it's quite big to get rid of that much bedding weekly. Should I still give the toys a weekly clean or is that the same?

Re: Hamsters in Cornwall
It’s the same for their toys. They don’t generally need cleaning unless they get peed on.

Re: Hamsters in Cornwall
It's best to do partial cleans ie not clean everything at the same time, so something always smells familiar. So as alpa says, 6 to 8 weeks is fine for substrate and just empty the litter tray every few days (if your hammy uses the litter tray the rest of the cage should stay prettty clean really). I have gone 2 to 3 months before. The more substrate you have in, the less often you need to do a full substrate clean - and even then save some of the old clean to spread on top so it smells familiar.
Deep cleaning isn't necessary - you don't need to disinfect the cage unless there is illness or disease. I just use a warm damp cloth to wipe the base of the cage and to be honest, with enough substrate and a litter tray, the base of the cage will probably stay clean and dry anyway.
So partial clean is - substrate one week, wheel a different week, any toys a different week again, or just as and when needed. It does stress them if everything is cleaned at once or too often, as it removes all their scent marking - which they do to find their way around and to make it home.
