Exclamation Unsafe chew toys?

So I went to the pet shop today and they have christmas bits out.

Some of their wooden chews for hamsters are lasercut plywood. They still have burn marks around the edges from being lasercut which i'm not sure is safe and they are made of plywood (you can see the separate layers of wood that were glued together).
I heard plywood was maybe a material to avoid in hamster things because of the resin glue used to glue the layers together. In case you were wondering it's urea formaldehyde.

Are these chews unsafe? Should I contact the chain?

They do not sound safe and if they are harmful then you should contact the chain. I am lucky because my hamster will only chew on whimzees and not chew toys so I usually just put them in there because she isn't going to chew on them .

I usually have the assumption if its a big pet shop chain (E.g. Pets At Home in the UK) the glue is usually safe, but if a lot of glue showing, its just advertising a poorly made product!!

Maybe email the company informing them that a certain type of glue is harmful to hamsters if its still being used in the products? It may just take one informed person to give them the information for a change to be made

Sorry if I wasn't clear. Plywood is a type of man-made board that is made of multiple thin layers of wood glued together at different angles. The issue isn't glue used to stick different panels of wood together to make a product like a wooden house it's the glue used within the sheet of wood that Pets at Home wouldn't make themselves but would ship in from a general wood supplier. Due to this I doubt the adhesive used would be pet safe.

Sorry if i'm not making much sense I'm not the best at explaining things.

I have tried tweeting at them because I hate phone calls but I think I'm going to have to call them. They don't have an email.

Ahh yes that makes perfect sense now with the structure of the wood used to build the items

An email of information to the company would always be helpful! Atleast then you can get information for yourself and either report it to a higher authority further or post on here their response Hopefully worth the investigation!! Good luck!

I recieved a response from pets at home saying that they talked to the technical team and got this response from them:

"I have received a copy of the test report for the glue, which is fully compliant and safe.

Please note that a large percentage of the chews have been in our Christmas range for years and have only changed design.
The manufacturing process and materials have not changed and we have never received adverse comments."

I don't know how to feel about this. They didn't specify which glue they tested: the glue used to adhere different pieces of material together to make a product(which is what they thought I was talking about to begin with) or the glue used to adhere the layers of wood to produce a sheet of plywood (the material).

I personally still wouldn't buy any of the chew toy products made of plywood but that's just my opinion.

I saw these today actually and came to the same conclusions. I don’t know about the glue but assuming it’s ok - just because they’re safe to chew doesn’t mean it’s good to! I don’t like the thought of them ingesting all the dyes and colourings either if I’m honest. Was just going to buy some to hang around the cage as christmas decorations
