Default Should I move his cage to a different room?

I only got my hamsters a few days ago so know it's early days

But just needing a little advice about where to put their cages.

I have a Syrian and a Russian Dwarf and their cages are both in the living room at moment. I have a 3 year old and a 17 month old so as you can imagine when we are home during the day it can be noisy, the tv is usually on also.

My Russian dwarf doesnt seem phased by anything she's quite a bold little thing really, but my Syrian is a no show all day (expected) but then he also isnt coming out at night anymore either. I literally dont see him unless I check under his platform to check hes alright. To begin with he was coming out around 8pm but now he's a complete no show.

I'm worried that all the daytime activity has frightened him so much that he no longer dares come out at night either when all is quiet. My children are fast asleep by 6.30/7.00.

I've now moved them both out of the living room into the utility room where its quiet. I didn't really want them in there as want them with us but I'm scared of frightening them, especially my Syrian as my dwarf doesnt seem phased. But I then worry if I move him into the quiet I will never have him back in the living room again. Obviously just want whats best for them both though.

What shall I do? Sorry for rambling! X

Syrians are naturally inquisitive so you might want to do a quick health check on yours if you’ve found it’s behaviour has changed suddenly as it may be due to illness.

It’s probably best that you’ve moved them somewhere quieter, I’m sure we wouldn’t want to have to sleep through lots of noise either. You can bring him out to play in the living room in the evening/night so you’ll still get to see him. My Syrian doesn’t wake up until 9.30pm anyway, that’s the time I usually go to play with her. Maybe yours just needs time to adjust to the new environment and figure out a schedule for sleep and play time?

I had a similar thing with our Syrian but we left him in the living room. Some of it depends on the personality of the hamster - some hamsters would come out for the attention if they heard the noise - others would wait till it was quiet to come out. They do get used to the TV being on (although I used to make sure it wasnt too loud or too near the hamster cage). Children can make a lot of scary noises. But I found our hamster tended to like coming out when he heard stepson's voice (a child's voice) as long as it was a quieter time and not lots of shrieking! If you've moved them to the utility room now it might be best to leave them there as they can get stressed by the cage being moved to a different environent. My only concern would be condensation if you have a washing machine and tumble drier in there as the air may not be the best place for them then.

If you've only just moved them then you could put them back in the living room before they get used to the change. I think the main thing is that they are in an area of the living room where the cage can't be knocked or kicked accidentally - eg in a corner.

The Syrian will probably get used to the sound of the childrens voices and if the children get really shouty or screamy it's good for them to learn they may scare the hamster and to tone it down! You could then train the hamster to come out around 8pm by feeding at that time and tempting him out in a tube with a bit of food at one end for some out of cage time on the sofa (if he's tame and isn't likely to ping and run away!) or in a playpen or fenced off area.

I'm assuming it's a he as boy hamsters tend to be more retiring and girl hamsters more maverick!

Just noticed you said you'd only had them a few days. Don't worry then. It takes them about two weeks to settle into a cage and build up confidence. If the Syrian needs taming then that is something the kids can be involved with. We did bathtub taming with our hamster (dry bath tub) until he was fully tame and stepson used to sometimes get in the bath first so the hamster can run all over him. Main thing is supervising the kids so they learn to be gentle and not try and grab or hold them tight.

a few days is no big deal. hams need at least a week to adjust. i keep mine in my bedroom, and although rm and i are not excessively loud, its definitely not the quietest room in the house. however, they seem to be active and curious, and ive had them for a few months.

Thanks everyone. He came out a little bit last night. Think it is mainly because it's early days x

Are they in the living room again or still in the utility room?
