Re: Our Tadpoles :-)
Once they change. If they hop/jump most of the time, then they are frogs. If they walk more than hop they are toads.
Hope they all survive. Letting them go at the rivers edge should be ok as they would naturally return to the river they hatched in to breed.
Hope they don’t get confused and come back to your house.

Re: Our Tadpoles :-)
Thank you CMB They would have a long walk back ha ha. About 5 miles across a valley and up a hill. Still wouldn't surprise me! I'm a bit confused that if toads live on dry land - how they lay eggs in the river without drowning!
The taddies had an unexpected tasty snack land in their tank - a mosquito got through the vents and is floating dead. Whether they can eat a whole mosquito or not I don't know. We shall see. I can see their little mouths open and close when they eat and they look funny hanging off rocks - they kind of suction themselves on with their mouths I think.

Re: Our Tadpoles :-)
Toads are good swimmers if need be; however, they require land. They lay their long strands of eggs attached to the leaves of water plants near the water's edge where they were hatched. Unlike frogs, they do not have to guard their eggs from being eaten by predatory fish, etc. due to them spreading foul-smelling, toxic secretions on them.
I look forward to seeing your toads prior to you releasing them back into the wild. I'm glad that the tadpoles enjoyed their mosquito snack instead of the mosquito snacking on you or your family. I am scared of female mosquitoes since they such blood and some spread diseases, too.

Re: Our Tadpoles :-)
We have had five tadpoles for over 3 weeks. And now have six! I thought I was imagining things. When I can't see them I nudge the tank to make sure they're ok an this morning did that and sure enough they all appeared. I count to check they are all still alive. Counted four - then the fifth one appeared and then another one! All in plain view so I didn't miscount.
My poor brain was thinking bizarre and wonderful ideas
1) The mosquito brought a tadpole with him
2) A tadpole wriggled his way here and found his friends
3) One of the tadpoles gave birth
4) Next doors cat got in and dumped another tadpole in there
5) Someone else dumped another tadpole in there, knowing we had a tank! (It's in the outside porch)
As all these options are virtually impossible I then thought - the sixth tadpole is much smaller so
5) One must have been piggy backing under another one (I'd have noticed)
6) One must have been permanently attached to one of the river rocks we brought with them (I think I'd have noticed).
7) One has hatched out and there must have been a bit of spawn in the water.
I am thinking it must be number 7 as the sixth tadpole is smaller. Is is possible a bit of spawn has been attached to a rock? The two rocks in there came from the area of river where we found them along with their river water.
For the first 8 days they were in their river water - I then scooped a bit out and added some fresh water. Did that a couple of times. After 3 weeks I changed the water completely. And there were only 5 tadpoles then - I have a photo of them!
So can only think a bit of spawn was attached to one of the rocks and has hatched out.

Re: Our Tadpoles :-)
Lol, that is a wonderful discovery, Serendipity! I truly had a much needed laugh at your thought process, too. Thanks for that, btw. Congrats on discovering your sixth tadpole; I can imagine what a huge surprise that must have been for you and your family. I believe that the little one must have hatched after its egg was attached to the river rock. Hee-HEE!! I wonder if you may find a few more surprises in the upcoming days.

Re: Our Tadpoles :-)
Still 6. I semi cleaned the water today and left the level a bit lower so there's an exposed area in one corner in case they need to start crawling. And added new food and new roots. Not impressed with the late stage tadpole food which just seems to be dried veg flakes and dried fish flakes. And I'm already giving them lettuce, roots, Daphnia and the occasional bit of crumbled dried shrimp (which stinks!). And the occasional few bloodworms now as well although not sure they're interested in those - hard to tell.
Am wondering if the tank will be big enough if they grow into little toadlets/froglets. Wondering if it's big enough now really - with the rocks in. There's a fair bit of variety and hiding places in there though.

Re: Our Tadpoles :-)
Lol, I was expecting you to announce that there was another increase in the number of tadpoles. The size of the tank that you will need will depend on the size of the type of toad and the total number that you are housing in it. It does sound like it will be way too small of a tank if you are planning on keeping them for a while after they turn into toads.

Re: Our Tadpoles :-)
I am sad to say I have just found all the taddies have died. It was only Friday I cleaned out the tank and changed the water and was careful it wasn't too cold and add a bit of boiled water so it was the same temperature as before. Our water is all natural spring water and I've been using that all along and the same food too. So no idea why they have died other than it has been very hot the last few days.
I feel really quite sad as they had got to be quite fat and have little tiny legs. They were fine on Friday and Saturday.

Re: Our Tadpoles :-)
Oh Serendipity, what sad news. The taddies were coming on well and you had treated them so well. It must have the the hot weather. It is unusually hot, certainly here.

Re: Our Tadpoles :-)
That is sad, I was looking forward to seeing your little toadlets but I'm not surprised really if it's anything like as hot up there as it is here it's a wonder anything survives.
