Smile Research survey

Hello all!
I've been researching quite a lot when it comes to hamster care, I've gone deep into many studies and questioned just about every standard we have when it comes to care. I'm not one to take things without question, and can never feel satisfied until I have cold hard facts backing things up. Of course though, I have decided to conduct a bit of research and come up with some findings of my own. That is why I have decided to create some surveys regarding miscellaneous topics pertaining to hamster care and (seemingly) random questions. However, I can't do any of this without your help! I would REALLY appreciate anyone who could take just 5 minutes or less to fill out this survey real quick. You don't have to let me know if you've done so. This is a completely anonymous survey. I believe I've made it an option to take this multiple times as one user so you can submit for all the hamsters you have if you'd like (though if you have 10+ or so, I'd prefer you not use all). Please answer as honestly as possible. Thank you all so much in advance

please note
I know a Russian dwarf is not an actual species, I've included hybrids to see if any interesting results come out of it.
Which country/area you're in is NOT a required question
Lastly, if your cage is in between two options listed, pick the lower of the two

Here is the link to the survey (please notify me of any issues)
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/6GGHR7B

I may decide to include more of my surveys on this thread rather than creating whole new ones for each. Thanks again

I know I probably shouldn't be going all critical on the survey , but wouldn't the results be an inaccurate representation of the average hamster owner, since everyone here is pretty well-educated in hamsters?
Just wondering.

I could give the measurements in sq cm but not in sq in

I think measuring cages in sq. in. is very much a US thing Drago, in Europe it's much more common to think of cages as cmxcm or sometimes sq. cm. so it makes it a little hard or a lot of conversions for us to fill out your survey.
How much your ham enjoys their cage size is a little vague too, some may enjoy it because it's got lots of space while others because it's small & safe!

I agree that the results obtained here are unlikely to be reflective of the average hamster owner. However, it would be difficult to reach a wide range of people. And, you probably wouldn't get answers from owners who are less caring of their pets even if you did ask, because I doubt they would spare the time or even know the stats of their cages. So, I think this is the best you can do under the circumstances as the results should be interesting.

I did convert my cage measurements from cm into inches, but it could be great if you could state the equivalent square footage in cm in future surveys, as Cypger says

Are you going to use these surveys for anything in particular?

I've done it Got my calculator out. Only suggestion I would make is an additional bit about upgrading as I upgraded twice - from very small, to decent size, to size I thought was best, but only put the second upgrade as no option to put the first. Just a thought, but maybe you don't need that info anyway.

Thank you all for taking the time! I didn't quite think of the conversions, which was pretty dumb on my part considering the US is one of the only odd countries who decided to use these measurements. How about this, I'm going to revise the survey and make the conversions so that it's easier for those who use cm. I'll also revise the "how would you say your hamster enjoys their cage" to something a bit less vague. Serendipity, I'll add an additional question I believe which asks whether or not you've upgraded more than once. I'll also add in a note that if you have upgraded more than once, use the cage size from right before the upgrade.

Now to answer some of the questions!
I've posted this survey on multiple sites so that I could get the most results possible. Of course it isn't going to be possible to get an actual representation of all owners, but this could give a general idea! I wonder if it would be worth it to post this in some form of general social media/forum to see what results we'd get from average owners.
As for the questions on the last question, I wasn't exactly sure how to word it. I was mainly looking to see if people thought their hamsters seemed happy and safe in their cages, but I can see I was a bit vague now! I have another survey which I'll maybe be adding later, but I am going to make sure all questions are detailed (and if not, that I explain them when I post).
AprilPearl, I will try to post the results of this survey. I mostly had a hypothesis regarding average cage size amongst owners, what hamster species seemed to have the largest cage, and which countries had the largest cages. This isn't going to be used for anything in particular, just wanted to get ideas of stats, and perhaps add the results into a care guide I've been working on

Thank you all again for taking this, and for the wonderful feedback! I will make changes to this survey accordingly, and will be sure that future surveys use the suggestions as well

I've filled it in for Inky

For anyone struggling with the conversions, then
Length x Width = size in sq cm
Then type "5302.5 square cm in square inches" and out will pop your size
However, I do think it would be useful if you specified that you were just talking about footprint, as otherwise many will count shelves. I'd also suggest putting in more sizes below 360 sq inches - Inky's first, brief, cage was 210 sq inches (shudder), but we've all seen cages even smaller than that.

Instead of the vague question about enjoyment, maybe you could ask if your hamster...
- chews the bars
- uses all of the space available
etc. etc. (with the option to pick multiple choices!)

Perhaps you could also ask questions about wheel size, food (i.e. what brand, with an option for other) and enrichment (tick all that apply from a list of common toys, plus a free text option)?

A huge thanks again to all who participated in the survey last time! I will compile all the results, graph them, and then share if you guys want to see

I'm back again with another survey, this time on the average lifespan of each species. I will be posting this throughout several different websites so I can get as many results as possible. I'm trying to get at least 200 hamster ages charted and analyzed to see the average age for domestic hamsters, and then the average by species. As with all surveys, feedback and comments are all appreciated, thank you

I've made this more open ended, which will make it tougher to analyze, but it should hopefully be easier for you guys. You can take the survey as many times as you'd like as long as you're supplying data on a now passed hamster. Please do not give answers for a hamster who is still alive, this is to get an estimate on how long hamsters typically live. Please try to be as honest and accurate as you can, thanks again!

Urgh sorry Drago I forgot about your first survey, I had meant to come back to it! It definitely would be interesting to see the results

I won't be able to help with your latest survey as my 5 boys are my first and only hams

Good luck with it, hope you get lots of responses.

Drago, I have owned 2 Syrian hamsters previously. My first lived to be 2 and my second was 2.5 years. I answered only for my first hamster. I was going to take the survey again for my second hamster, but it wouldn't let me. So, if you want it, you can use that second age too.
