Aw - glad you got to the bottom of it. Maybe one of those little air purifier machines with a filter in, in that room would remove most of the smell without having to open windows or use air freshener. They are very good at removing smells (as well as dust and allergens etc). The really good ones with hepa filters are quite expensive though. I believe they come on heat about every 4 days.
I had a little inexpensive one in a house where I was allergic to something once, and it did take away smells like cigarette smoke and cooking smells. You don't want an ionic one or negative ions though. They create ozone and they're supposed to bad for you. The hepa ones are expensive because they remove the tiniest particles but that's probably not necessary for smells. So a basic one that removes smells might be good.
This one isn't too big and about the cheapest I could see that isn't an ioniser one. It also has a carbon filter for removing smells
Still a bit expensive though. But at least you'd be smelling fresh air!

Although burning rubber maybe isn't that bad!
