Default Can/should syrians use flying saucer wheels?

My ham has 2 wheels - a normal upright in one cage and a flying saucer in the other. But im2not sure if the saucer is ok for her. She is only about 10 weeks old but i dont think she gets the hang of the saucer or looks particularly comfortble. Should they use them?

They really aren't a good wheel. They don't allow for a natural running pattern, and because of the design lots of hamsters could also fly off of them. They're expensive and take up a ridiculous amount of space as you probably already know, along with causing side arching

They are fine to use as a temporary wheel, but I wouldn't recommend them for permanent use. As amity mentioned, their spines bend oddly and the fact that they must become used to running on that type of wheel, shows they're unnatural and not very suitable. Until you can upgrade however, the flying saucer will work just fine granted it's a proper size

I've taken it out now as she was going back in to the other cage to use the normal one. And I dont like the look of her on the saucer. Ive got something to take back do I'll exchange it for a new wheel like her other one. Thanks everyone

Or you could buy something else instead, and save up for the best wheel on the market(the Silent Runner)! They're much better for Syrians in the 12 inch size, and are the safest wheel design. They are nowhere near as low quality as most wheels, and the size is actually good for any Syrian size rather than taking a chance on a smaller wheel and ending up having to spend just as much later on for various reasons on yet another wheel.

I completely agree with amity, the silent runner is an excellent wheel! Another good wheel is the wodent wheel although this can be a little more rattley than the silent runner. It's definitely expensive at first, but will last you years and will be natural and healthy for your hamster. In the meantime you could use the kaytee comfort wheel, the 12 inch would be preferable, but for temporary use the 8.5 inch would be okay

Proceed with caution on the Comfort Wheel. They're just about the noisiest wheel you could ever have, and while the pricing is seemingly wonderful and they do their job the noise is a major drawback which makes them worth considerably less than what they're priced at.Plus, the spindle can be something that a hamster gets attracted to chewing which is not good

Hi Jennie. A flying saucer wheel can be nice as an extra in a cage if you have space, but they do need an upright wheel as the main wheel as the others say Also a flying saucer for a Syrian needs to be a 12" one. I am a big fan of the 12" Silent Runner and did a video review of it It's not a cheap wheel at approx £25 and I also paid an additional £5 for cage mounting plates, but it's the best wheel I've had and been using it for a year with no problems whatsoever.

Sounds like your hammy would be best settled in the one cage with a conventional wheel from now. She is maybe a bit young to get the hang of a flying saucer even as an extra.
