Default Tips for fighting a cold?

I got sick, my throat feels like sandpaper and my nose it runny. Do any of you have some good housemum-tips to getting on top again asap?

I have been drinking buckets of chamomile tea with honey and lemon so far, and I think it has been keeping me from coughing.

I really do want to be able to get back to work, I feel a bit guilty for staying at home as I generally feel fine most of the day. The mornings and the evenings are the worst. However, I'm worried that I will start coughing like a maniac, seeing as when I start coughing, I will cough for 2˝-3 months, which leaves me with very little sleep and bother people around me. The thought of getting someone else ill is getting to me as well.

So I wanted to know about your tips and strategies for battling a cold. Well known or not so well known, I've noticed that it varies a lot from country to country, so I'm interested in anything!

Honey & lemon are good for coughs. Cavonia and the good linctus syrups are good for annoying coughs and sucking sweets. But colds spread like wildfire in offices and enclosed spaces, so getting a fit note (new name for sick notes these days) for seven days from your GP and get SSP from your employer may be a good idea depending on how you feel physically. Colds typically last for a few weeks before they start to drain away, but keep eating well and stay warm. x

Hexokain numbs the throat a bit and therefore supresses the cough. Strepsil does the same. Honey is good, but it has to be raw! Aggie is actually down with the same fight now, so i have actually searched this. I'll find the link i found helpfull.

I haven't found anything really helps that much with the symptoms, a cold generally runs it's course whatever we do as the symptoms are really just the body doing it's job & fighting the bugs off! I do try to make sure my immune system is getting all it needs so a little extra zinc can help win the war along with plenty of fresh veg, fruit & good diet generally.
Echinacea can help the immune system too but is better as a preventative than a cure really.

Drink lots of water and get good sleep
I'd see about taking a few days off work
I always get lots of cold medicine: Nyquil night medicine for sleep
and Dayquil for day medicine. Then lots of cough drops.
Hope you feel better soon

I don't like taking the meds that just seem to numb you. I find it better to try and get a decent nights sleep which I can only manage by clearing my nose with an Otrivine spray. I do tend to drink a lot of orange juice freshly squeezed which helps and other than that try and rest propped up on a pillow as much as possible. If I must I take a couple of paracetamol.

As other have mentioned, cold symptoms are hard to fight, because it's your body fighting against virus.

For shore throat however I find this infusion/decoction amazing.

Natusor 3 - Farinol - Infusiones | Amatusalud
http://www.soligaia.es/Natusor-3-FAR...-SORIA-NATURAL

Maybe you can't find the exact same product where you live, but the ingredients are:
*Agrimonia eupatoria,
*Althaea officinalis, root
*Salvia officinalis, leaves
*Thymus vulgaris, steam
*Plantago lanceolata whole plant

In my opinion its flavour is terrible (my boyfriend however loves it), it taste like frankincense. But it really helps me when my throat really hurts.

Lemon juice and honey is another popular beverage against shore throat, but it's not good if you have mucus.

You also can take steam baths with some eucalyptus oil, to help you breath and smooth the throat.

My grandma used to leave a chopped onion over her bedside table because she said that it help her breathe, but I 've never tried tbh. It sounded odd.

woah, thank you all! I didnt expect that many replies!

I went out and did some shopping after reading cypher's reply on healthy food being important, which made me feel bad about my fried breakfast and lunch (though it was what I had around that didn't require me to leave my house)

I should post a picture of my health haul, it's quite something haha

Have anyone heard about warm water with salt and cayenne pepper? I found that gargling it removes the soreness for a few hours. It was a tip that I found on the internet some years ago, and it helps making you feel better, but I don't think it does anything to combat the cold itself
