Question How can I get good pictures of my hamsters

Hi I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to get good clear photos of your hamsters. I have tried many times and the result is blurry pictures. There are lots of wonderful pictures on this forum and I would like to be able to get some of my hamsters too!

It is all about timing, patience, and persistence.I've taken the same photo in some cases 10 times and still ended up with a slightly blurry picture.Very few hamsters will sit still willingly, but if you can somehow get a hamster to sit still that is the perfect way to get a good picture!Of course,it can help to have a sleepy hamster or a hamster in a more confined space for pictures.

A lot of people that get the crisp non-blurry images use a DSLR camera and know about things like Shutter speed, aperture, etc. The easiest way on a phone is to get the Hamster on a light background, turn off the flash and make sure the room is as bright as possible, also always make sure the light is coming from the back of you, never facing straight towards the camera lens.

Aside from that all you can really do is hope for the best and keep on pressing the button.

I use a Nikon camera that isn't the best because the lighting varies from shot to shot, don't know why? Probably needs to be replaced soon. But I use a flash and take a couple pics and pick the best one to post. I try to get a pic when the hammy isn't moving as well, which helps.

I take photos using my iPhone, and while I would like a DSLR, for now I find that the key things are
- lighting - I have a black hamster, so this is more of a challenge for me than some others. I tend to take photos near a window, during daylight hours, with the flash off. Afterwards, I'll tweak it and adjust the brightness, contrast and saturation until it looks right (I invariably just use Instagram for this - the edit tools are actually quite good, even if you don't want to put a filter on)
- hamster energy levels - it's far easier to take photos of a hamster that has just woken up than one that is running around like a bat out of hell and generally making a pain of themselves.
- persistence - I can honestly say that 95% of the photos I take of Inky are thoroughly unusable. However, thanks to the wonder of digital photography, I'm able to take loads and some, by fluke if nothing else, will result in a picture with the hamster looking in the right direction and not moving!
- positioning - if I want Inky in a specific position, I know the chances of her actually doing that by herself are next to zero, so I will physically pick her up and put her in the right place before taking the photo (quickly - again, a sleepy hamster is more likely to stay in the same place for a few seconds!)
- bribery, on occasions! You don't always want a photo of a hamster eating, but sometimes they will sit still just long enough if you give them a bit of their favourite food (and hope that they don't just pouch it and keep moving!)

My photos of Inky are linked to in my signature

To be honest most of the photos I've taken were on my phone and all I did was press the button (or if it was at arms length gave the voice command for it to take the photo) ...

I have a couple of different cameras that I've used and then I've also used my smart phone. And do you know what? Half the time it's the smart phone that's the winner. Because I snap a lot of pictures and select the best ones (and I mean a lot. You should all the terrible ones that don't come out) and it really does depend what mood the hams are in. I find if you fuss too much trying to get a good shot then they get annoyed or flustered by the intrusion. So sometimes a simple, not too in your face quick snap on a smart phone can be the winner.

To add to Velma, the smart phone may not have a flash but I think the hammy's don't really like the flash, I think they just put up with it. But if you can get good lighting without the flash would be better for the hamsters, imo
