Hamster Sitter
Hey all.
I am going away for Christmas on the 20th for about 5 days and am a bit worried about who will take care of Custard for me.
We have a housemate (our landlord) but he is always out doing something and even if I were to message him every day I don't know if I can count on him to check in every evening to make sure he is ok and has everything he needs. He does not like small pets so there would be no enthusiasm for him to take on this responsibility at all.
I'm not really familiar with what kinds of small animal care is available around London and whether those places are reputable so am looking for some advice; either for professional or private care.
I am in east London so if anybody knows somewhere he could stay or even if someone on here thinks they could watch him for me please let me know.
I definitely do not feel ok about leaving him on his own.

Re: Hamster Sitter
My dad cares for Jasper for me, when I am not staying with him. He often stays with his girlfriend at her house and has to leave Jasper for the night. Jasper is always fine, but my Dad makes sure to give him a little extra food in case Jasper was hungry. Don't know if that is helpful to you.
East London is quite far for me, as I live closer to the West. I would offer, but I live with my mum and there is no space for a hamster other than Jasper (when he stays). Have you tried contacting a breeder or vet or even a rescue centre who may be able to watch him for a few days?

Re: Hamster Sitter
Hey Chesca
I've been looking online and have found a place called Home Squeak Home that's about 3 miles from me. It's run by a registered vet and they can apparently do boarding care or home visit. If they can pick up and drop him home for a bit of extra money I am thinking they might be quite good. Reviews seem positive and prices are pretty cheap considering.
I'm a bit worried that there won't be room for him somewhere at this late stage. Originally we were planning on going away for 3 nights which might have been alright but then we couldn't book flights for the day we wanted and had to make departure 2 days earlier, hence the boarding issue

Re: Hamster Sitter
Could you not get a taxi or a bus? That might be easier for you and them.
I just found the website and had a look. They seem very good with animals. It's always worth enquiring.

Re: Hamster Sitter
I emailed Home Squeak Home and got a reply this morning. They have room for him but said to bring his own cage with him to minimise stress. The only problem is his cage is massive (80x50x80), I don't think I could transport that. He has a much smaller travel cage but that would definitely not minimise stress as its tiny. Also he has moved into his new cage only a week ago so being in any other kind of cage now would be traumatising. I'm really not sure what to do :/

Re: Hamster Sitter
Take him with in his small cage to travel there but move him back to his regular cage at Squeak Home Squeak.
Could you bring something more like a 40cm by 60cm cage? This Pets At Home might be alright as temporary accommodation. Jasper has one for long travel trips (he is a dwarf so I can fit way more in). You can manage an 8-9inch wheel in there, but if you want it on the bars, it won't be easy. I ended up binning the shelf and wheel as they are just so impractical.
Substrate depth is ok.

Re: Hamster Sitter
Can you tell me ho w did you find thehamster care? Do you recommend it? I need to go to Germany in February, it's only 3 nights but I'm a bit worried to leave Daisy alone if any of my friends can't take her

Re: Hamster Sitter
@DrropS Where are you? I'm in inner SW London, a short walk from a mainline train station. If you could get Daisy to us, and I'm around on those dates, then we could potentially look after her for you.

Re: Hamster Sitter
I live in SE really close to Elephant and castle. From here there are actually quite good connections to everywhere.
We can keep in touch and that would be a great help if possible (:

No problem - you're actually not that far away from us at all
When you have dates etc., just let me know and drop me a private message!
