Traveling in cold weather.
Hi guys.
I just got a new Syrian hamster, and for Thanksgiving break Im driving back home to my hometown. With that, I of course have to bring Honey-B with me.
I watched many of videos on traveling with a hamster and I have those bare essentials locked down. But, I have to transport my hamster from my apartment to my car in 30°F windy weather. Its long walk and Im scared that my hamster will get too cold and during the transport.
What should I do to insure my hamster will stay warm?
Thank you!

Perhaps a carrier inside a box with heat packs like those used for reptile shipping(not sure on the exact name, but snuggle safe heat pads might work as well!).Keep the box relatively closed, but have just enough holes added to the box to give proper ventilation.

Re: Traveling with me hamster in cold weather.
Last winter I had to do some vet trips in cold weather so I used a snugglesafe pad, (not fully heated as that would be too hot so you could either let it cool for a while or just heat it for a shorter time) I put the pad in the bottom of a large bag with the carrier (plenty of substrate inside) on top, I would put the carrier on top of the pad for a while before leaving so the whole carrier could get nice & warm & my hams were fine, nicely & snuggly till we got home again.

If you don't have a heat pad then layer the carrier with cardboard and substrate and use a scarf or towel and wrap it round the carrier tying it with string.

How long a walk is it from the apartment to the car? Just wondering if you could bring the car a bit closer as a one-off?

If you can get a snuggle safe, that would work really well. Make sure to look online as I managed to save £8 on buying one from Amazon instead of Pets at Home .

Do you have a clothes or hair dryer? You could use that to heat a towel to wrap around the carrier for the walk to the car.

Re: Traveling with me hamster in cold weather.
I'm very interested in this subject. We are traveling with our hamsters for Christmas and they are going to be outside for at least half an hour. We are going to buy snuggle safes but it's still a very long time. It is not all at once though, but depending on bus departures it might even be longer.

Re: Traveling with me hamster in cold weather.
Hand warming packs and such could be used if kept out of reach and a safe distance away, protected by towels or something of course Heating and reheating a Snuggle Safe pad may not be possible all the time, but you may be able to get things as mentioned which in a pinch should work as well.

Re: Traveling with me hamster in cold weather.
Hi, Thanks for your response! I actually put a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel in Honey-B's cage. I also covered his cage with a blanket. It was all a success, and Honey stayed asleep the whole time and woke up when we arrived!
Thank you everyone!
