Re: Sunflower seeds
I would also suggest looking at Vectis's thread as well. Their are suggestions for supplements that lower blood sugar. Also the Higgins Vita Garden does contain Cane Molasses which is a direct source of sugar. I know people say it has benefits, but personally I would go - no sugar whatsoever. Carbs can be broken down to make sugars and that is enough. Tricky to find dwarf hamster food like that in the US. I think the Burgess dwarf hamster is the only sugar-free one or as Vectis suggests, making your own mix with the healthy seeds possibly (sounds time-consuming though).

Re: Sunflower seeds
Thanks, Burgess is inexpensive except for the shipping. What do you think about Vita Kraft vita Nature? I have some of that food including an unopened bag.
Cinnamon doesn't like it but it's going to be too bad for him. Unless he doesn't eat any of it? Koala likes it, but it contains raisens. which can be easily picked out but otherwise sugarless I think? Any thoughts on Vita Nature?

Re: Sunflower seeds
It does seem a bit odd but most foods in the US do seem to contain molasses, if you can get the Burgess I would stick with that, we've been through all the other US mixes a few times now & I think the one you already use worked out about the best of the bunch.
The Vita Kraft vita Nature has apples as well as raisins & I'm not keen on the idea of dried potato somehow.

Re: Sunflower seeds
Ok thanks for looking Cypher, I know we've been over US foods but this is a refresher
Vita Nature is a better quality mix over Vita Garden
Do dwarf hamsters like Burgess?
I find it odd how there isn't any diabetic food available?
Clearly they know there's a huge need for it...

Re: Sunflower seeds
Many dwarf hams live very happily on Burgess! Like all mixes some like it more than others but it's one of the most widely used mixes for dwarf hams here in the UK, if not the most widely used.
You may find the grass pellets get left, most hams aren't mad about them but you can always supplement something else for a little extra fibre which mostly what that adds.
I can't imagine that the commercial pet food industry, mass breeders & pet shops communicate to the degree that they would actually acknowledge the need for a diabetic mix or go to the trouble of creating one & it probably wouldn't sell enough to be commercially viable.
Diabetes is a problem but probably not as common as you might think fortunately.

Re: Sunflower seeds
We have to agree to disagree on some things Cypher. You don't have all the answers. I think diabetic dwarf hamster food would open a can of worms.

Sorry - it wasn't a link really - I just copied and pasted the ingredients list from Burgess web page Not sure why it came up as a link
It is annoying that there isn't a diabetic mix. I suppose they think "sugar free" would do for diabetics but it isn't quite that simple.
I can't find a link for Higgins Vita Nature. I think the Higgins mixes are supposed to have good quality ingredients, but not sure how suitable they are for diabetic hams.
How about messaging Vectis to see what her mix is?
