Yes I think it's fine for all hamsters, but only a very small amount. It's just a food supplement. Also high calorie to help with weight gain. I put a "pinch" out in a little dish by themselves for Charlie, about twice a week when he was having them. He liked them and licked them all up! Good for humans too!

I looked up all the highest calorie foods when trying to help Charlie regain his weight. Pecan nuts are very high calorie - mainly fats, but healthy fats.

He looks oily & has a waist which I read is a sign that they are sick. He's looking weight & looks sickly but some days are better than others & he cleans himself up a bit He still uses the wheel & drinks excessively & so far he's eating ok. He basically just looks bad most of the time, still let's me pick him up tho, like this morning

It's a shame he is looking sickly - it sounds like it is his condition that isn't so good, but good that he is still eating and drinking and using his wheel, so he is still enjoying hamstery things even if he may be feeling a bit ropey. I would go by his behaviour mostly. Charlie has gone a bit greasy at times and it has improved, and he also pees excessively which I think is fairly normal as they get older so hard to tell if it's that or the diabetes or both with Cinnamon. Poor little guy. I hope he improves soon.

Cinnamon definitely has diabetes, Koala too but i dont want to spend $300 at the vet to diagnose them as I know there is no cure. I wish he was just untidy at tines. I'll use the vet if I'm in the mood to spend the extra money I know that sounds terrible but I can't spend money on them if it's not absolutely necessary

Not all hams will eat fenugreek seeds, with diabetes the usual practise is to make the tea usually with powder rather than seeds then you give that to them in place of their water but you have to monitor sugar levels & stop giving the fenugreek tea once the levels begin to normalise or he could become hypo which is as serious as him being hyper, if you don't know what his sugar levels are & you don't monitor them then it's probably better not to use the fenugreek at all.

Hemp seeds are a great food but very high in fat, good fats but do remember that you want to keep fat levels moderate not high.
If he's lost weight this is most likely due to his blood sugar problems not due to him not eating so adding high fat foods to his diet is not a really good idea.

Good point. I think I suggested hemp seeds before posting the article on diabetes diet! Mainly for their vitamins. I don't think you need to spent $300 to get them diagnosed either. You are doing the best. That article does say that diet and hydration can make a big difference. The diabetes can't be cured, just managed. I don't know much about the use of Fenugreek, but if you did decide to do that it would probably need to be combined with daily testing for sugar levels to up or down the dose of Fenugreek and may need a bit of expert advice on this, not from me!

Did you read through Vectis's page again CB, it really is a good starting point & worth referring back to again as & when you need to, also this thread here, Souffle outlines the main points you need to consider including diet & how to respond to the various different readings you will get over time when you test urine, it's variable & glucose levels as well as ketones can go up & down so you may need to give different things at different times depending on how he's doing.

I'll read that article later, have to go soon. I won't use fenugreek seeds. Thanks both of you for your help & not condemning me for not taking them in right now.
