Default Why?

Why do toys have to be labelled "boys" or "girls"?? I know many little girls who love trains, toolkits, cars, dinosaurs etc, and lots of boys who love prams, dollies, doll houses etc. It really frustrates me! I went to get my neice a present today, and we took her into a shop. She is 3. She LOVES toolkits the most (so she can "fix the car" like her daddy does!). But the lady in the shop was intent on steering her towards the dollies and things, telling her to "be a good girl and look at the little girl toys". She has only one doll who lives "in prison" - a box LOL. We didn't get anything from that shop as there was nothing in there she wanted, but we did get her a little doctor's kit as the second shop didn't have a toolkit! I don't get why they do it!

I don't get it either, as a child I loved toy cars, lego, dinosaurs, toy animals. Wasn't into the 'girlie' stuff at all.

I was a tom boy as a kid and loved getting muddy, building tree houses, dens, playing in the mud, collecting bugs... lol I don't get it either. There weren't as many colour themed toys either like pink for girls and blue for boys

It is annoying. I wanted a Scalextric when I was 11 and wasn't allowed one boo hoo. And a Thunderbird 2. Guess who has a Thunderbird 2 now?! Little boy - we share it Little boy liked knitting until the last year as well which is seen as a girly thing. Mind you now he's 8 he turns his nose up at the idea.

Some people don't change their opinions as times change.

Girls are more accepted/allowed toys traditionally thought of as for boys. But if a boy plays with dolls it causes strange looks/comments.

Ooh you built one - now that's impressive My Dad did give me some toy cars to go with a lego board he made that had places for buildings and had roadways. Maybe because he fancied playing with them lol. No boys in our family. So in some ways I was quite lucky - if my Father or Grandfather bought the toys they were less girly. My lovely grandpa once bought me a bat kite!

I still have my brittains farm set too. That was a favourite toy of mine and some animals were my mothers when she was younger most toys were unisex then, but now there's hardly any unisex toys. Even lego has gender markets

I was never allowed to play with my brother's toys, and as he was the only boy they were "his" but me and my 2 sisters had to share the "girls" toys! So I kind of once broke my brother's toy just so he had to play with us! Ooops!

I had cars, soldiers, games consoles and other general boys toys which I liked. I have a twin brother and four older sisters. We used all used skipping ropes and I played with dolls.

I used to wearing girls shoes, especially high heels, but always got told off. I didn't understand why only girls got to wear those styles. I thought boys shoes were boring and horrible looking.
