Default Camera recommendations?

I might be getting a camera for my birthday. I am tempted to get the same one we got little boy, but I actually don't need something waterproof and rugged and there are good ones that are cheaper than that. Somehow I've ended up not having my own camera after I sold one a couple of years ago intending to get another, and then just kept using other half's (which has fiddly buttons) and little boy's.

So just wondered if anyone could recommend their compact camera. Don't want anything big like an expensive dslr as I only take snaps these days.

Thanks!

Nikon are good I agree. A camera is only as good as its lens. The best lens are usually found in Canon ( I have a power shot as my compact but the model will be out of date) and I understand the Leica lens are in Panasonic cameras these days.

I also have a Nikon Coolpix, but unsure the model number! I LOVE mine, but actaully want an SLR LOL. I got mine from ASDA a coupld years ago, and it was about £108ish at the time, so would probably be cheaper now

Thank you - there are a mind boggling number of models these days! Yes Nikon, Canon and Panasonic will have good lenses - I'll have a look at some. I guess you need to go and try them out really, but any recommendations for models gratefully received Except they change the models so often! I'll have a look at the Canon powershots. The Nikon S700 has good reviews - thanks. I find some are too small and some are too big!

I just had a look at the Which best buys for compact cameras. The top four were two Canons, a Nikon and a Sony - all over £300 though. But the fifth best buy was little boy's Olympus! So might stretch and get another one of those. At least it's not likely to get broken

Yikes, I see what you mean about choice. I had a look at the canon power shot range to limit my head spinning! Mine is the SX210 IS (14 megapixels) which doesn't exist any more unsurprisingly. There are some models I assume are the more modern equivalent. All I can say is that I feel no need to change it as I am completely satisfied. I find it easy to carry around in my bag or pocket. Easy to use without too many whistles and bells. Takes excellent photos.

Thank you Coco - that one has very good reviews and is the kind of thing I'm looking for, yes, as it has manual control and a fast lens. It's just working out what the equivalents are - there are so many and some have got quite heavy with all the extra technology and larger sensors and so on.

Little boy's is an Olympus rugged type. It takes nice enough pictures, has a good macro feature and is good in low light and has a couple of settings for partial manual control. For the same price though I could get something with a bigger sensor. But some of the zooms seem quite long these days and can be dust traps. Whereas the Olympus has the lens sealed and an internal zoom so it's pretty dust-proof.

Still deliberating. There are a couple of newish Canons that look equivalent and are good but as they are now all bells and whistles they are at a higher pricepoint.

I'll check out the newest Canon compacts with manual control and see what's what

I had a secondhand Contax T for many years (film camera) and loved it. It had an excellent lens was small and lightweight and took better pictures than my slr

I'd say canon are best overall. I use the canon 70D but it's quite expensive, I think it's around £750. The 700D looks good and that's around £400. Not sure how much you're wanting to spend. But both these cameras have really good pre-set scene modes. I've not yet tried every option out on the 70D but it does take some amazing pictures.

Thanks Winnie. It takes a bit of thinking about I think. In the past I've bought expensive ones and didn't actually like using them and sold them again. So something ergonomic and nice to use is something I'd like as well. Dslr's do tend to be but have decided I want something a bit more portable. I think it'll be a compromise between picture quality, size and price probably. Have seen something I'd like (Ricoh GR) but it's quite a lot over budget, so will look at what is within budget. I'll probably end up getting one like little boy's lol! It really is quite good in low light. And at least it won't get broken.

The compacts with good lenses and larger sensors are mostly £500 and over. But sometimes a compact with a smaller sensor and good lens is good too. Going off to read a bit more I'd like something I can keep for a while as well and wouldn't have to replace every two years, so up to £250 would be ok, especially as have something to sell to go towards it.
