The Freddy 2 is quite a tall cage You'll be surprised though - it seems enormous now but in a few months time you'll be looking and thinking it doesn't look that big and maybe you would like something bigger! (That's what happened to me when we got an 80cm cage).

Are you going to put a full level in it?

I think it's true of any cage to find it small after a while I started with wanting to make a bin cage that was around 720 square inches and then moved to a 3 feet by 3 feet DIY cage idea, and eventually decided it's going to be a German sized DIY cage.

A full level sounds like a really good idea!

I second that all cages "shrink" with time. We have Bernie in a 40 gallon long tank with a full length shelf.... And I think it's too tiny now!

I would love to put a full level in! but not entirely sure how to do that. D: It has some little ledges with a ladder already they are just not attached.

If it's the Freddy 2 it will need something to prevent falls from a height So if not a full level then a few overlapping shelves. The main thing is that your hammy couldn't fall from the roof right down to the floor if they decide to climb up or monkey bar across the roof. If you need some extra shelves, Ranchhouse cages on ebay do some good ones - I got a pack of shelves from there, or they sell single ones - they just screw to the bars and come with the screw fitments already attached.

Maybe the easiest way is to do something similar to the Alexander cage shelves. ie have a shelf at either side front to back, and then a joining shelf across the back, then a ladder or piece of wood as a joining shelf across the front (resting on the side shelves). Then you will just have a hole in the middle, for access up to the shelves and need something over the hole to prevent falls down.

Thank you. I am aware about how tall it is. A ham won't be living in it for a while until I can put some more levels in. I have good sized cages for my dwarves luckily. The Freddy 2 was an impulse buy haha seeing as I got it for 15 quid from someone on ebay haha.

Bargain cage as it it quite large you will have more options for layouts. Enjoy setting it up and I hope what ever hamster gets to live in it likes it.
