As long as you either know what you're doing or go to a very good hairdresser, there isn't a huge problem dyeing hair. It's mostly the chemical-rich dyes and the bleach that harm hair most of all, dyeing without aftercare, and dyeing way too often that end up causing problems.

Boxed dyes aren't very good either though, but there are tons of good dyes out there and usually they'll be the ones that are all vegetarian or vegan ingredients and or organic dyes.

Lots of great advice from velma though, which is always useful because not all people know the ins and outs of different dyes and how they might react if you decide to change colors at some point!

Also be aware that if you dye blonde hair darker it can look slightly odd in that your eyebrows and lashes don't match correctly and you need to consider the overall look. I'd say embrace your natural beautiful blonde colour. I bet there are loads of people dying their hair to get that colour!
It is also expensive to maintain a colour as has already been mentioned.

The whole brows not matching is part of the big reason for gothic people shaving their eyebrows off and just drawing them back on!Personally I couldn't go there without feeling terrified but for those who are either scared of shaving eyebrows off or just want a temporary look there are eyebrow pencils and things used to fill and color(colour)in eyebrows

I've not read this thread yet as I've not really had much time lately but people have raised some interesting points. I've been thinking about dyeing my hair black with either a red or purple dip dye for about two years but have delayed doing so because I have quite a lot of allergies. My hair is naturally dark brown and some people had suggested henna dyes to at least achieve the black but after reading some of the points mentioned here, I'm not sure whether it's worth the risk.

With proper dyeing techniques and the right dyes and aftercare, damage isn't a major concern. However it takes knowledge of these things to get it right

Black is really really hard to get get rid of. It can only be got rid of with lots of bleaching. So again, it's worth thinking about the commitment/cost of maintaining it and getting rid of it. It can look fab but I'd never really recommend it as a "fashion colour" that you might only want for a few months.
You can get some really nice dark brown glossy colours that would be similar to your natural colour but add a bit more tone than a lot of people have naturally and tend to look a lot better with certain skin tones than proper black. The dip dying would have to be done with bleach first so consider the condition the ends of your hair are currently in. The really bright reds and purples look really cool but have to be reapplied every couple of washes as they fade off so again, it's just being aware of that before you take the plunge

Hmmm, I'm not sure if all that maintenance is quite my thing and I'm not sure I like the idea of all that bleaching. I'd never have known any of this so I'm glad I decided to have a read through this thread.

I'm thinking that a wig might be worth a consideration instead.
