I believe that people look best with whatever color you had as a child. So if your hair was real light blonde, then getting high lights will brighten your appearance. Like Winnie was saying, be an individual, the way you were created is the way to go in my opinion. Color has chemicals that are even cancer causing you hear a lot about too.

I dyed my hair red a few years ago and now regret it as my hair is really frizzy and curly so takes AGES to grow, so I can't even get highlights like I had in the past. I did once cut all my hair off (moment of madness!) but it took soooooooooooooooooooooo long to grow back. This was over 3 years ago, and it's only JUST shoulder lenght now! And then when it was growing I (stupidly!) dyed it red again ... So if I want to get rid of it I have to "strip" out the color which is really bad for your hair. So the hairdresser couldn't do the blonde highlights I wanted and I had to try dying it a sort of auburn color to try and tone down the red ... It went ginger! Thankfully that wasn't permenant so it didn't stay too long!
If you really want to go brown, you could try a non permenant dye - so it washes out after so many washes. This can be a good way to try it and see if you like the color, and if not then you only have to wait til it washes out. I wouldn't try doing it yourself the first time though. Some of the ones you buy in the shop that claim to be "wash in wash out" ones actually last so long that you can't get it out without stripping it or growing it back out ... Could you try some darkish low lights? A hairdresser should be able to advise you about colors etc. That way you could try it without dying your whole hair that color and then after you can choose to go comepletely that color or not ...

I've never dyed mine It's red/auburn and I was happy with the colour. Until I started to get a bit of a mallen streak/grey patch lol. I fretted about that and was going to try Henna - apparently it has to be good henna and there are all different kinds and different mixes that give different colourings. It's supposed to be good for your hair too and conditions and feeds it rather than drying it out. It's also supposed to be rather messy. I never got round to and my streak doesn't look so bad now - I quite like it But I don't want to start looking like an ageing biker (I have long hair and if it went completely grey or white I am sure I would look like an ageing biker) - so if that happens I might try the henna - there's a special henna mix for taking on grey hair.

Apparently it depends what you mix it with and how long you leave it on, as to what colour you get, from brown, to gentle red, to bright orange, to even black I think.

For anyone that likes changing their colour, I wouldn't recommend henna. Due to the presence of metallic salts it can react badly with other colour. Plus you're stuck with it. You can ge vegetable dyes which are semi-permanent which, I believe, don't react. But as I said before, temporary colour isn't always temporary

Henna for Hair - Frequently Asked Questions
I'm only mid 20's and went grey years ago which is why I started dyeing it! My real mom (I was adopted) was totally grey by the time she was 30! It appears women on her side of the fmily are like that

Don't know what Henna is, so not much help there! Did just think that some dyes you have to be careful with as they can make your hair go greenish if you go swimming or something!

My grandmother was white by the time she was 30 as well. I was thinking the same thing might happen, but it didn't. Strange things, hair genetics! At least we ladies don't go bald (not often anyway).

So basically, I really want to dye my hair brown. I am a natrual blonde and have never dyed my hair btw. But the thing is, two girls (who are best friends) in some of my school classes recently dyed their hair the colour I want my hair. I'm afraid that people will think I'm copying them because they are popular girls and all that. But I have been wanting and thinking about going brown for AGES. I just don't know what to do. I'm also afraid people won't like it or will judge me idk.

All help/advice is appreciated Xx
Aside from the awesome advice about dyes to use,I'd recommend just not caring what everyone thinks of your appearance in general. After all, these people in your school will be part of your life for only a short period time and after that it doesn't matter! What does matter is you being happy, and if you're happy expressing yourself and not hurting anyone who cares what people are thinking anyways?

In my opinion we care far too much about what others think of us in society, which is the absolute last thing anyone should be doing.Perhaps I have that mindset being alternative myself, but first and foremost focus on your happiness, not everyone else's opinions.

People will judge you no matter what you do,so instead of worrying about getting judged instead do something productive and make yourself happy!

That's a good point. And to answer your question, and knowing what young girls can be like, then yes they may say you are copying them by dying your hair the same colour I think highlights sounds nice - but I'd still avoid the nasty chemicals

Anyway it's nice not to be the same as everyone else - to be yourself and not one of the sheep

Definitely avoid chemicals and dyeing hair too frequently as well, you do not want to struggle with damaged hair later on just for the sake of aesthetics when you have great alternative dyes out there Also lots of bleach in general isn't a good idea either,so keep that in mind when choosing a dye.

Velma is a hairdresser, and a very good one I expect, who knows what's what with these things, but not all hairdressers are. I once shared a flat with a girl who was training to be a beauty therapist and she was always dying her hair regularly. She did it so much she ended up with virtually no hair - just a kind of 1cm frizz all over. It all fell out! I think it was too much peroxide. She did dye my eyelashes darker though, which was rather good! As I had pale eyelashes and it looked so much better and meant I didn't need mascara. Then I gave up on make up altogether in my 30s and looked much better for it! The eyelashes darkened a bit naturally. I have good skin now in my fifties!
