Just point him towards some shelving units in the shops that are big enough for Alaskas Off the top of my head I know the largest sized Ivar from Ikea will fit an 80x50cm cage, don't have one any more so I can't tell you if it is quite big enough for the Alaska's 84cm, and this is the shelving unit I have in my room, which I've just measured and has 84.5cm space between the poles. Buying a shelving unit will totally save him time and money, after all Plus they have adjustable shelves, so if you need to use them for other things in the future you can easily move the shelves around!

Ooohhhhh thankyou so much!

Does anyone know any other shelving units that will fit two alaskas on? Possibly two small cages on too? (I don't know if we are having all the hamsters on one unit)

When I was a child I shared a room with my brother. We had a chest of draws each with a large gap between them and a matching piece of wood on top. Can't remember haw long it was but you may be able to do something similar depending on space available.

Apparently the summer house is the same size as my room now, but with upright walls instead of sloped ones, so techniquely its bigger... So I could get a taller shelving unit and put cages on there... Just have to find one with big enough gaps between each shelf!

What about these. 40cm deep so there wouldn't be much overhang front and back. They're pine so you could paint them whatever colour you want or leave them natural.

B-24 Wooden Shelves, 5 Shelves 170 x 80 x 40 cm: Amazon.co.uk: Kitchen & Home

(Edit - the wood one isn't wide enough - only 80cm)

Or if you want something modern and funky looking this chrome one is 45cm deep - a bit more expensive though.

Chrome Wire Shelving Unit and Cover Bundle - 5 Shelves - H1800 x W900 x D450 mm Clear Cover: Amazon.co.uk: Kitchen & Home

You could fit four Alaska cages on either of those. If you like the chrome I think it looks sturdier and the cages will stick out less too as it's a bit deeper (and it doesn't need painting!)

I think the wood one would need attaching to the wall with something to make sure it couldn't get pulled over.

There's also this lower chrome one - you could still fit four Alaska cages on it as one could go on top, and it's a bit cheaper. Still 45cm deep and 90cm wide. Although at over 5 ft tall, the top cage would need to have a front opening door really (which the Alaska does).

These are similar and a bit cheaper, with both heights available and still 45cm deep.

There's also this black one for about £60 which is 60cm deep so a good depth for cages without them sticking out. It's plastic but kind of looks ok in black and is industrial strength and not a bad price.

Extra Deep 5 Tier Plastic Racking Shelf Shelves Shelving Storage Unit - 400 Kg Load Capacity! 80 kg per shelf - Heavy Duty Shelves!: Amazon.co.uk: Kitchen & Home

Or this really nice red one! About £50 and 55cm deep which is also a good depth for the Alaska cage.

Shelving Unit Heavy Duty 5 Tier Shelf Steel Racking DEEP TS18/90/55: Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools

They are all 90cm wide so fine for an 80cm cage - but the Alaska cages are 84cm wide so the width of the side poles will make a difference on some of the shelf units. The red one looks to lose about 3" width due to the side poles so the space width would be 82.5cm approx - so maybe that one isn't an option.

In which case the deeper 60cm shelves would be better, so you could slide the cage in at an angle between the side struts and it could be wider than the struts because the struts would be in front and behind the cage depth (if that makes sense.

Or the chrome ones have much narrower side struts.

Out of all of them I think these chrome ones would be the best size for the cages. The struts are narrower so the cages would just slide on and off the shelf easily, but would have a slight overhang either front or back of about an inch or two, but that would be fine. And there's enough height between each shelf.

I do like the chrome ones!
I think the room is going to be black and white, so it would go with the room which is hopefully going to help me get my way in this situation!

That last link - if you had the four tier chrome one for £65 you could fit two Alaska cages and have one shelf and the top still free.

You could just say you have found some great shelving and it's the right size to fit cages on as well and you'd like to go ahead and get it. Show it to him first maybe. I don't see what objection he should have to shelves that will fit Alaska cages unless he is just being difficult!
