Default Preparing for my hamster

I have watched a lot of you tube videos and read care guides online and joined here.

Here are items I have bought ready for my hamster.

I know most toys, wheel etc are too small for the size hamster they are sold for.

I have seen log cabins for sale. A small one and a larger one. Both are sold for hamsters. I would like to know which would be best for a dwarf hamster.

You look to have a good selection of toys and supplies there! Someone with dwarf hamsters may advise more on the houses, but I'd say not the first one - it needs to have an open floor and sit on the substrate really (better for nesting/hoarding and easier for cleaning). Have you seen the Leif labyrinth houses? They are popular and a good size for a dwarf hamster, plus they have a lift off flat roof for checking the hamster, and can double up as a platform/shelf.

It's sold at Amazon and Zooplus - not sure about pets at home

Is your wheel a Silent Spinner or the Pets at Home look alike Silent Spinner?!! Silent spinners don't spin very well these days.

That first raised house would be ok as a play house but as Serendipity says you really want a house with no base to sleep in, not sure if the top comes off that or not but if not it would be difficult to clean.
Of the other three the Pickles cottage is probably a big enough size for a robo but maybe a bit small for a larger dwarf like a russian or chinese. You would probably need to plastikote the inside of any wooden house to protect it from pee.
I agree a nice house with a flat roof is good as it doubles up as a platform or shelf for putting things on, the only problem with the Trixie one is that small space under the ramp if a nervous ham hides under there you have to take the whole house out to get to them!
A lot depends on your budget but Rodipet have some great alternatives if you can stretch to it!
The wheel looks like a P@H silent spinner look a like to me? Velma did a review here you might want to look at if it is.

Or a shoebox house! Makes a nice hide and has a flat roof. Turn a shoe box upside down and cut a door in it. Or if you want one with a removable roof, leave the shoe box right way up with the lid on and cut the floor out, then cut a door in it. Might not be too glamorous but it would make a good house/hide, and if you pile the substrate up round the outside and put a tube over the door you won't see much of it anyway

I like the labyrinth house. My wheel is the p@h version of the silent spinner. I tested it and it is spinning well and quiet. I have a wonder wheel on a stand (my budgie loved it when he was young) but it is rather noisy, so I was going to use it in a playpen.

I read the review and will see how it works out. I live near p@h so I can usually get there most days if I urgently need anything.

I did make a nice house out of a hamster toy box before. I cut the box along one side and turned it inside out so the outside was plain.

I have a cardboard tube that has been folded to make it more square. Cut the corners each end and folded the flaps to make a treat parcel.

I have mentioned to one of my sisters that they (4 sisters) could get me a hamster cage for my birthday as a joint present. I have mentions the zoo zone 2 large and the barney cage, mentioning minimum/recommended cage size. I will have to wait and see if they actually get me one. Only two weeks to go.

I think I prefer the barney as it would be good for a Syrian if I get one in the future.

That's a good point! I was just imagining yesterday how the Barney might be good for a dwarf in future and how I would set it up differently for that Talk about thinking ahead lol. Charlie's only just moved into it. I think you'd need quite a few extra shelves and make virtually a full level, like in the Alexander. The ranch house cages shelves are easy to fit. They come with the screw thread already in the shelf and they supply the right sized screws and washers with each shelf - you just put the washer on the screw and put the screw through the bars into the hole in the shelf. Very easy. You can buy different sized shelves separately or they sell packs of various sizes.

The shelves all have rounded edges so there are no sharp corners. So for example this one you select the size you need. It's 25cm deep (say for the opposite side to the supplied shelf and if you select 20" wide (50cm) or 21" wide (about 52.5cm) it will almost be the depth of the cage - you can fill gaps with smaller shelves over them.

I actually think it would be quite hard to make a full level with different shelves in a cage that size, and could work out quite expensive too. But you could always get someone to make one the right size, with a hole in the middle for access, out of plywood. ie two shelves 52cm by about 40cm so you'd just have a gap of 20cm down the centre, then put a couple of wood ladders across them at the front and back, leaving a 20cm by 20cm hole in the centre for a ladder or tube to go up and something over the hole so they can't fall from the top right down the hole and land on the ladder.
