Always worth thinking ahead as good cage well looked after can last a long time!
I think making sort of step levels with smaller ledges or shelves can work well in a barred cage.
I really like all the Ranch house cages stuff too, they have a great range & really good quality.
These little degu shelves are great for filling gaps as are lava ledges which also help keep nails trim when they climb on them.
I think the main thing is to give yourself time to set the cage up well, some things will always change a little depending on what the individual ham likes but having time to do it in advance, experiment a bit & think things through rather than trying to do a rush job when you get your ham is by far the easiest way to go.

Good luck with the birthday hints!

Cypher has some lovely set ups for her hammies - check out her threads! I find it all a bit of a hassle setting them up and making them fall-proof lol. Also it can get expensive buying extra shelves and so on.

You know personally, I think the Alexander or Zoozone would be a much better option for a dwarf and both would also be good for a Syrian. The Barney would be great for a Syrian but to set it up for a dwarf could work out really quite expensive. It would have worked out cheaper for me to get an Alexander, in the end, but they were out of stock.

Maybe you could hint to your Sisters that you would make up the difference if they got the Alexander, as it would probably cost you less than sorting out the height of the Barney. Providing it's in stock of course.

The taller cages are fine as long as the hamster doesn't climb the bars and hang from the roof, but if they do, they tend to just fall off and need a soft landing or they can break bones and injure themselves.

I have mentioned the Alexander cage as well. Me and my dad (who is great at diy) could do a full level shelf using just 1 piece of wood. We could also ramps, houses etc.

I think the Alexander was out of stock when I looked as it didn't show up on the shop website.

I have seen a zoo zone 2 large at the wholesale shop where I get pet food from. It may be cheaper than online. I will have to check when I next go.

Sounds great if you have a Dad who can help make a full level Yes it doesn't help if it's out of stock. If you can make a full level, the Barney would be fine!

CMB having a Dad who's good at DIY sounds really handy! Whichever option you go for you should be able to make a great ham home between you.

Serendipity can I ask why you think tanks are better for dwarfs? Is it because you see it as a less problematic set up for the owner or you think it's better for the hams?
Admittedly I've only ever had one of mine in a tank for a limited amount of time but she seemed so much happier when I moved her to a barred cage, interaction & taming is so much easier too, I totally agree that some thought has to go into any set up but all of mine have seemed to really enjoy life in their cages.

I think it was meeting Rach who had a few dwarf hamsters and always used Duna tanks after having injuries with cage falls, plus RH tends to think they're safe. But then I've never had a dwarf hamster! And your set ups are amazingly clever I do worry about falls and injuries a lot I guess - maybe I've read too many German forums lol.

I don't know much about Rach's set ups, just that she has beautiful hams! I know RH has a preference for tanks, I can understand why some people do & I know accidents can happen but with care they shouldn't & I think it's worth noting that there are cons as well as pros for both, I don't think either is right or wrong, depends on the ham & the owner.

I have this Wooden Cottage for Hamsters or Gerbils from Amazon for both of my dwarfs.
I'm no expert on them by any means, but a few coats of Plastikote on the inside (black) and the outside (Pink for Tinkerbell, Purple for Pixie), and they're good to go. They both love sleeping in them, loads and loads of space for bedding (I use tissue paper), they both spend a good 20 minutes or so re making their beds when the beddings changed over but there is plenty of space, Pixie uses half of her bed for her food hoard, so there's plenty room to shuffle and eat
hope it helps.

I have one of those, Zephyr used to have it in her play bin, they are nice houses, a little bit on the small side for some I thought but they can always burrow underneath if they like a big nest!

That's a nice looking house too and it would match a lot of the platforms that come with he barney cage.

I may have to do theme changes as there are so many different houses etc I like.
