Wonderful article about responsible pet ownership
I know, it's actually directed at fishkeepers, but I felt it was applicable to any pet and we'll worth the time to read! I hope you enjoy it.

Re: Wonderful article about responsible pet ownership
Great article BrainGirl. I read the whole thing.
I will admit, I bought my hamster quickly without thinking it through, and have made mistakes, but I'm in it for the long run, and have enjoyed taking care of him.
I do talk about him to family, friends, coworkers, and anyone who will listen.
I have told people recently that I really enjoy having my hamster, because it's a reminder how we need to care for and be gentle with animals in general.
I really liked how this article spoke from the perspective of the fish. There were lots of great points made.

Re: Wonderful article about responsible pet ownership
Fantastic article - spot on, on everything mentioned.
So great to hear from the fish - the fish's say!
Pet owners should take note and think before they buy on a whim.
This article should be viewed and discussed in detail by anyone wanting to get a pet.

Re: Wonderful article about responsible pet ownership
I'm glad you liked it!
virtualkeith: I'm as guilty as anyone of jumping into pet ownership (or being thrown in as is more likely the case these days) but the point is that you've done your best to care for that animal and learn its needs.
Thin_Lizzy: So right and I think that's a great idea. It's easier to feel empathy for a creature you see as capable of the same feelings as you.

Re: Wonderful article about responsible pet ownership
I think these should be up in Petshops, with one for each type of animal.
Seeing and reading that article should be a wakeup call for everyone.

Re: Wonderful article about responsible pet ownership
Yes, I can't see Petshops doing it. It's all about profits and a quick sale these days.

Great article! And I too didn't think it through when we got a hamster, or know enough - but thanks to an RSPCA book and this site I learned

Re: Wonderful article about responsible pet ownership
People put fish in their freezer to kill them? What the hell? I actually got a bit upset reading that. It's very early in the day to get teary over a hypothetical fish.
I need to have words with my aunt about keeping three goldies in a bowl thing. I told her that they need space, grow huge and live for years but I don't think she believed me. I have my family sick to death of hearing about animal welfare *sigh*
