Default Chinchilla forums...

Having had a disasterous attempt to rehome 2 baby robos, the association have just rung to see if I can help them with some baby chins

I have ALWAYS wanted a chin, but dont know much about them really, so need help before I say yes...

Anyone here have chins? Or can point me in the right direction of a good, friendly forum?

Many thanks...

Hi there, we've looked after Chinchillas, for friends many years ago, when I was in my teens. Would you just be fostering them or giving them a forever home because something to be aware of is that they can live upto 15 years of age.

As you know they are largish and quite active small animals so will need a large cage. We had ones in cages around 4ft x 4ft. They also like to have company, for some reason they don't like being alone, you can keep them in same sex groups and mixed groups but if there are males in with the group they will mate, so best to have same sex groups. They like interacting with people once they are confident with you and tame enough and like to come out the cage for exercise, so you'll need to make extra time to spend with them. They need plenty of things to do because they can get bored.

They need a diet high in fibre and protein and also like Hay, they will also eat carrots and other types of vegetables but not too much, they also like raisins, sultanas, dried fruits etc. Fresh water should be given to them daily. Nothing high in fat should be given to them like nuts, it could cause stomach problems!!

Like hammies they also love their sandbaths, so a good deep supply of sand should be given to them at least once a day, do not keep the sand in their cage as they will use it as a toilet.

Anyway that's my little knowledge of Chinchillas, just to give you an idea, i'm sure there might be someone on here that might be able to offer some more in depth advice, however i'm sure if you Google Chinchillas, you'll come up with some good information.

I'd love some Chins but just don't have the room at the mo!!

I have an empty Feret Tower

The idea is to foster, but knowing that I am an unsuccessful fosterer, they would probably be here for life

She has an influx of males and females; someone who bred and is now moving to a smaller place = no room I would only take on 2, and they would be the same sex. She has 2 little "chocolate" coloured male babies born on 8/10/08 who she is asking me to take - mostly as the others are breeding pairs, and probably pregnant. She needs time to try and intro the others I guess?

I have spent the day googling, in French and English, and have spoken to a friend who works in a pet shop, but nothing beats the experience/ knowledge of those who have them. I have found a forum called Chin Wags that looks good, just wondered if anyone knew of it...

It would put my robo plans on hold though , but I have wanted chins for over 10years, just never been in the position to afford the cage set up complete with chins. Bizarely I havent managed to sell my feret tower, and the Mary I had ordered for the robos turned up damaged, and the rescue lost the mum and babies too, so is it fate? She needs an answer rapidly as she needs to place them to free up the cages - I will keep googling!!

Someone on here must have a chin?

Hi Alie,

Years ago when I lived at home we had 3 chinch's. To be honest they weren't that good pets for us, but I think we didn't know how best to fullfill their needs. In fact they got re-homed after they ate through an entire plasterboard wall and water pipe...LOL!! Wasn't funny at the time. Think they were going at it for a while behind a cupboard in the animal room!! They didn't much liked being handled wither but would bear it. They are so cute and fluffy though aren't they. I hope someone on here can give you the benefit of their positive experience!!

ooh chinchillas watch out you dont get bitten by the chinchilla bug it really is catchy, i have 13 and mum has 9

they need to live in pairs a lonely chinchilla is a very unhappy chinchilla i have had singles and when i have managed to sucsessfully pair them the change is miraculas

they can not have freh veggies they are not good for them at all, and to be honest most dont even like them, unless they are like my jazz who makes a habbit of begging for the guinea pigs veggies -rolls eyes-
they dont just LIKE hay either they need a constant supply of it, they must be fed a pelleted food musli is not acceptable as they are such picky eaters, most chinchilla rescues actually put it on their T&C that the animal must not be fed musli as its main diet, i would recomend charnwoods if you can get your hands on it over there.
you should limit them to just one or two treats a day no matter how much they beg, their absolute favorites are apple rings and rasins, they also like things like fengreek crunchies and they can also have a monkey nut once every week or so, they also LOVE millet but again restrict it to a small bit (about 2") every other week, also even though they are herbivors a cuttle fish bone goes down a treat and is highly recomended, it helps keep their teeth trim and is very high in calcium

chin wags is a good forum, my mums a member on there and i tend to lurk sometimes (no account though maybe one day...)

chinchillas make excalent pets and who ever says they dont MEH they are all such charactors, they are active in both the day and night in short bursts

i wonder what colour she means by chocolate... could be brown velvet or hetro beige.

haziebabie im with you on the walls, keep atleast an inch between cage and ANY thing they are experts at eating what they shouldnt including wires walls doors skirting boards pillows duvet covers, they are VERY destructive creatures and need lots of toys to keep them enternained, any plastic in their cage at all is a BIG BIG no no
