In the 15 years of having hamsters, I've always gotten mine from my local petshop and they've all had long lives. Over that time, I've gotten to know the owners well.
They seperate the sexes straight away. Because they're a small shop, their selection of stuff is minimal, however, anything they don't have and I've asked for they've gotten in for me.
I wish they'd sell bigger cages, the ones they do sell are way too small. The scary thing is they sell a lot of them. It would be great if pet shops were more up to date on cages, the cost of caring for a hamster and about the different types/breeds.
