Lol! Found it - ugh. I have no idea how, but it was right at the back of the cupboards under my bag of recycling. And it has been nibbled! Aargh! Looks like we have a mouse. Unless Charlie has been secretly getting out of the cage at night, but I don't think so. This is why I got a mouseproof hamster cage! I took the mousetrap up when we got Charlie as thought it was dangerous, but will put it down again now, seeing as he doesn't have the run of the room any more (and doesn't seem to want to come out at the moment anyway!) Until I have caught the mouse and then take it up again just to be on the safe side. They come in from the fields. Usually we catch 3 or 4 - a family. Sad but has to be done.

Lol- glad it up showed up!! Mice have enjoyed the toast, too! Lol. I don't see mice where we live, but the house we moved from, was sitting on a corn field at one time. When it would rain, the field mice would come into the basement, through the gaps in the garage door. I never seen them in the main house, only in the garage/basement. This was before I had hamsters.

The house we are in now, I've had 3 birds fly into the house. lol. There's a lot of different small breed birds, like red robins, blue birds, humming birds, that live all around me. It's nice to hear the birds chirp, in the mornings.

It sounds lovely having all those different birds. Although I suppose not so lovely if they get in the house. We once had a pigeon fly through the bathroom window when I was a child, and my Dad couldn't catch it. Poor thing bashed around flying into things and bleeding everywhere. Looked like the Texas Chainsaw massacre had been in the bathroom afterwards, although strangely the pigeon didn't seem that injured when Dad finally caught it.

This is an old house with lots of gaps in skirting boards, and floorboards - not our house so I can't go round changing the skirting boards. Must be heaven for a mouse if they actually get in. We are quite near the river and once had a rat! A huge brown one it was. OMG I freaked so much when I caught it. I knew it was something big because it kept pushing the mouse trap bait out of the way and managed to carry an apple from the table to behind the sofa! Then one night I was sitting upstairs and it just walked into the room. I screamed - the rat ran and it sounded like a herd of elephants thundering down the hallway. We bought a large electronic trap which is brilliant - fairly humane as they get killed instantly when they walk in it, but an electric shock. All I could see was this long tail out the end of it. I thought, all I have to do is pick this up, don't look and take it out to the bins - couldn't do it - had to go and get landlord to do it and he looked quite white afterwards! He then went round the outside of the house pointing all the gaps in the stonework! Ok, rat saga over. I will have to put mousetraps down though - couldn't have mice trying to get into Charlie's cage and harrassing him - after all it is full of hamster food, cheese etc. There is no way a mouse could get in but Charlie might feel threatened.

Oh thank goodness, I've been watching this thread hoping it would show up soon. All is now right in the world

Sorry to hear you have mice though. I love them but being wild I know they can't stay for hygiene reasons.

Mystery solved! Hope you catch the little invaders. I personally will try to catch them release them, but they do have to be removed from the house however it has to be carried out. They can bring vermin and disease in to your own furries. Hmmmm, really thought it was the Borrowers :-/

I've never read the series you mentioned having the Borrowers but every time I see that word I can't help but think of the Tommyknockers, by Stephen King. I've only seen the movie and it was cheesy, but completely freaky

No, no BG! I adore Stephen King and Dean Koontz, but The Borrowers was a lovely children's story. Not like my favorite scary books.

Yes The Borrowers is a lovely book by Mary Norton. I read it as a child but she is a very good writer and it still reads quite well for adults too. It has had various tv and film versions which don't do it justice. Little people who live under the floorboards, mainly one particular family - definitely worth a read! She also wrote Bedknobs and Broomsticks which is actually a really good book and nothing like the awful cheesy disney film! It is two short stories, one called Bedknobs and one called Broomsticks. I saw it in a village sale recently and bought it to read to our little boy - he's a bit young for it at the moment as the language is quite adult in places (long words etc) so I read it again myself and couldn't put it down! Excellent writer!

As for mice - yes sadly wild mice are vermin so have to go. I did try the humane traps once but it was a bit of a nightmare and apparently they can die of fear in them if trapped too long before you find them. I also found they got wise to them! I don't like the regular poison as it is cruel and you don't know where they have died either so can smell. I've found some very good ones that are like a plastic unit with a small tunnel/hole in either side and bait inside. It dopes them fairly instantly and the poison works after they are asleep. Usually you find them a couple of inches from the trap. Still not nice but seems to be the best way I have found that doesn't seem cruel and you know where they are to remove them. Plus you know when you have got rid of them when you stop finding dead ones.

Still not much luck with socks though, lol! Maybe the mice took them. Just to make the odd sock situation worse, I have had my foot in an aircast boot a lot this year, after an injury, and now an ankle brace. You wear a special sock inside the aircast boot, meaning I have only been wearing one sock on the other foot, so end up with more odd socks! Just found a few down the back of a radiator. Speaking of socks, I have just bought these to use one for Charlie as a Christmas stocking and will wear them afterwards lol!
