Questions for HC members, I'm curious!

Is "lovely" just a British thing then or is it just not common in your area? Also "poorly"? I never really thought about those words not being common, haha. Although I do say poorly quite a lot, it's definitely not a formal word.

I would use lovely to describe how attractive I thought something or someone was, but I have never used poorly before now. I would say they were sick, unhealthy, unwell, or maybe just that they look bad. It is amazing how we can speak the same language but have so many words used differently. Makes things interesting!

We rarely say "lovely" or "sickly" or "poorly". We say "pretty" "gorgeous" "sick" or "not well". We also don't say "proper" we say "right".

Spelling varied too, it autocorrects on this site. We spell things like "favorite" not "favourite" and "color" not "colour" and "neighbors" not "neighbours". Also, we usually spell it "gray" not "grey".

I say it in real life now though! I get weird looks, lol.

Also, I never said, "simply" in the context of "simply wonderful" or "simply gorgeous". I only said it as "simply assembled".

I agree. I love having discussions about regional dialects and different words, etc.

Colby, we use all those as well, but lovely is often used as a 'milder' version of gorgeous when describing something visual. It's mostly used it a similar sense as 'heartwarming', I guess is the best way to put it. Something pleasant that pleases the heart (now I just sound like a greetings card :-& ).

I wouldn't be able to have an adult conversation and use the word 'poorly' if it wasn't about an animal or a child :-p. I find it hard to say it in a sentence without using a motherly cooing sort of voice, haha.

I'm orig. from the NW, however, I've been in the South, for almost an decade! It' grows on y'all.. LOL.. I tend to say a few words, as they say, in the South, don't think I have a thick Southern draw.. *just a slight, S draw*..
