Default Story Time!

So I have quite a few animal-related stories, and I'm bored to death so...

Gather around the campfire!

1- So my grandfather has had chickens for as long as can remember. He still does, and he loves them to death. I spent tons of time with them when I was younger, especially the chicks.

Once, when I was about 9 and my little brother, Sam, was 6-7, my grandfather ordered 8 chicks. When you bought eight, they'd send you 2 "mystery chicks" for free. So, my grandfather said I could have one of the mysteries and Sam could have one. We got up around 7 and picked them up. Sam was still sleeping, though, so I got first pick. There were two, one brown and one yellow. I chose the yellow one.

While my brother was gone, my grandfather joked that the brown one looked like mine, but dirty! Sam was right around the corner, however.

So, while I was at the garden, Sam presented me with a frustrated, brown, wet chick. "The dirt won't come off my chick!!!"

We blow-dried the poor thing, and he lived, surprisingly. But it was funny later!

2- When I was about 8, my neighbour bred cats. She had 4-5, but I wasn't fond of them. They often would kill things, and for this reason I made it a point to checkout whatever they had in their mouth.

Once, I saw something green in the largest's mouth, and proceeded to pounce on it. I wrestled that cat and pried its jaws open and grabbed the lizard inside.

She had a large scar on her side, but was fine. I put her in a critter keeper with some moss and a hide, with plans to let her go in the morning. But that morning, she had laid 8 eggs! I brought her container outside, in a bush, and took the lid off. I checked it 2 months later, and only egg pieces were there!

3- My grandfather often catches opossums in his traps and relocates them so they don't harm his chickens. I always named them!

Once, he caught one in the morning, and was going to move it the next day. I named her Shiny, and talked to her for hours. My friend came over and we talked to her and each other. I went to get a Popsicle, when I heard my friend shout, "Maggie?!? There's baby awesomes(that's what we called them) in here!

Sure enough, Shiny had eight babies. Beach, Sunny, Ocean, Sandy, Frozen, Snowflake, Snowy, and Snowman. I loved watching them grow! We moved her to a lot and kept her safe and fed until her babies grew and we let them go. It was very fun!

So that's all for now. Thanks!

Thanks guys! I love to write them, glas you like reading them

4-So when I was about 6 or so, my grandfather got a hound-dog pup from a friend, and we decided to take him camping. So, we got on our four-wheelers and started to drive up the mountain behind my grandfather's house, the puppy following. About half way up, I turned around and realised he wasn't behind us anymore. I told my grandfather, he said the dog must of gotten distracted and we'd go back and get him if he didn't catch up soon. So we continued, but once we got to the top we hadn't seen him. So we walked back down, calling him and telling him he'd get a treat if he came to us. Finally, we got down to the house and there he was, locked in his lot outside.

We ran inside the house, where my grandmother was. "Why did you lock the dog up?" my grandfather said. But my grandmother didn't even know he was back, she hadn't been outside since we left. So that little dog had run back and somehow gotten locked in his cage, we assumed the neighbours saw him loose and put him back, but everyone said they didn't move him. We still don't really know!

5- My grandfather always did and still gets me any animal I want. So once at the petstore, they had little white mice, and I loved them. So I asked him if I could have some, he said yes, and I picked two out.

They lived in a ten-gallon tank(which was a perfect home for two mice at the time, no one knew any better) with a wheel, food bowl, a house, and a water bottle. I held them with gloves everyday, and my two girls were relatively tame. Well, at least I thought I had two girls!

Actually, I had a boy and a girl. You can probably guess where this is going.

So, soon I had six, chunky baby mice. One had a black spot on his head, he was my favourite. They were all precious. I loved them, Sam loved them, my grandfather loved them, my grandmother, however, hated them. She wanted to sell them, but there was no way I was selling my babies, so we kept them. They had a habit of chewing a hole in their water bottle, letting the water drain out, and then sleeping in it. Surprisingly, there were no fights. We separated the guys and gals after the babies ate on their own, and I kept those mice for a good 2 years. I also don't remember the males fighting, I bet they did though. Those were my first mice, but I still have mice today

Colby, I love these stories. Your Grandparents sound just wonderful. I firmly believe that children who grow up with pets have a better sense of empathy for others. Being able to care about and care for others besides yourself is a wonderful thing.

Thanks for all the lovely comments. And I totally agree DrK, it's hard to be a cruel person when you grow up surrounded by things that need you!

6- When I was in kindergarten, we had a semester of science where we learned about farms. My teacher wanted to get eggs and chicks for our classroom, but the school couldn't afford the incubator. So, I joked that I could bring in chickens. She, however, believed me!

I called my grandfather, and he loved the idea, so he said he would bring a miniature mother hen, her tiny chicks, and the mini father, so they would be easy to hold. And we could learn about genetics, and why the chicks look like they do. He also had honeybees, so he said he'd bring honey for the teachers.

So the day came and my grandfather brought two containers: one with a snow-white mother hen and 8 chicks, and one with the black father. The kids and teachers loved them! My grandfather let the rooster sit on his head and walk around the playground. By the way, that teacher loved me after that!

7- So my friend and I pretty much spent all day together most summers, and we did some cool things.

Once, we were catching crawdads in the creek and heard a chicken. I figured one of my grandfather's had escaped. But this one wasn't my grandfathers. It was black with orange-bronze patches. My grandfather's chickens were tame, so I assumed this one was and tried to grab it, but it ran off.

Izzie and I spent the 4 hours chasing that chicken! Poor thing! But, after luring it out of hiding with a slice of pizza and some corn, Izzie grabbed it and handed it to me. We then spent the rest of the day wandering around the road asking people if they were missing a chicken. Finally, some lady said it was hers, so we gave it to her and ran off. We told my grandparents but they probably didn't believe us..Oh well.

A short one today

8- When I was about 4, I was outside running around the driveway, and my grandmother watching me through the window. I spotted a snake basking in the sun, and decided I wanted it. For 2 hours my grandmother saw me running around, but didn't know what I was chasing. Eventually, I caught it and grabbed it. I held it up with pride.

As soon as my grandmother saw this, she bolted outside where she made me put my snake down and took me inside. I complained for weeks!
