Hello Saraya'n'Star. My hammies use playpens because there are just too many things for my hams to get into, under, or behind. I have far too many electrical cords that a ham can reach and I cannot move them each time I want to let the hams out. You need to make sure whatever room you decide to let your ham free roam in is clear of any wires, holes in baseboards or in kick boards under sinks and cabinets. Small spaces behind furniture are very attractive to hammies, but are crazy hard for humans to get them out of if the hammy decides it's a neat spot for a nest. Check out the DIY projects for playpens on the WIKI. I think they are safer for hammies unless you are absolutely sure your hammy cannot leave the room you choose. And, even the best behaved, tamest hammy needs supervision at all times while out on free roam.
