Question Why don't your hamsters run away?

Hello everyone,
Me and Danni are very close now and I have now tamed her properly and can hold her in my hand etc but on here I have heard that people can let their hamsters go anywhere around their homes without them running away. I was wondering how you do this as I think it would be really nice for Danni. Could anyone tell me how to teach her to do this?

Usually people will section off a "hamster escape" proof area, and pick up anything harmful to their hamsters. Once they get more tame, they will tend to come back to you as well.

My two dwarfs get to roam around the floor a bit but always come back and crawl up my feet as I'm watching them.

Hello Saraya'n'Star. My hammies use playpens because there are just too many things for my hams to get into, under, or behind. I have far too many electrical cords that a ham can reach and I cannot move them each time I want to let the hams out. You need to make sure whatever room you decide to let your ham free roam in is clear of any wires, holes in baseboards or in kick boards under sinks and cabinets. Small spaces behind furniture are very attractive to hammies, but are crazy hard for humans to get them out of if the hammy decides it's a neat spot for a nest. Check out the DIY projects for playpens on the WIKI. I think they are safer for hammies unless you are absolutely sure your hammy cannot leave the room you choose. And, even the best behaved, tamest hammy needs supervision at all times while out on free roam.

Basically most hamsters will try to escape, wherever they are. Playpens are great.
