Gardening
I come from a long line of farmers, apparently, so I guess gardening is in my blood. Unfortunately, most things I grow turn brown and die off. I can almost hear the collective rolling over of my ancestors in their graves.
Anyone else garden?

Re: Gardening
I grow terrariums with succulents and cacti, as well as indoor ferns and herbs. As for outdoor stuff I have a 10 year old Hibiscus named Fred, but he lives inside in the wintertime. Otherwise, I kill plants haha, I never seem to get outdoor stuff properly cared for

Re: Gardening
I grow my own strawberries, our garden also had potatoes/beans/radish and some other things, though the strawberries are the best, can't beat one that is fresh picked and washed...better than a store in my opinion'!

Re: Gardening
I tired a variety of different plants, all with the same result. Death.
I tried to grow carnivorous plants like pitcher plants and venus fly traps. I had one, a purple pitcher plant, stay with me for a few years, but it was eventually dug up by the dogs and never fully recovered after that.
I also tried growing succulents, and they lasted for about 3 months before dieing off and eventually being dug up by the dogs.
Lastly, I tried growing a minature rose bush in memory of a beloved chihuahua of mine who was attacked and killed by another dog, but its looking like a dead twig in its pot right now. I am almost certain that its succumbed to "brown" thumb.
On the plus side, I have successfully grown pumpkins from seed in the past, and had several nice pumpkins to display as decorations in the fall. They grew to be about 10-25lbs each, so they were considered a success. I also have successfully grown marigolds from seed too. I even had them come back at least one year later after planting them in the front flower bed.
So, not all my plant growing adventures ended up futilely. I plan on growing pumpkins again this year, if I can find the space, and then reattempt my miniature rose bush venture.

When I was a little girl, we had strawberry plants all along the side of our house. A nice little patch, if I do say so. However, the birds, squirrels, and chipmunks all had their fill of them when they began to ripen each year, leaving none for us to eat. Well, at least somebody enjoyed them.

Re: Gardening
LOL. I love gardening and I just ordered some new flowering cactus in some new colors. I also have to start all my baby pots so the flowers will bloom in time. I LOVE Spring and Summer!

Re: Gardening
HollyHamster, the worst we get visiting our garden are hedgehogs! The birds try and pick at them but we cover them
Also, our Golden Retriever (Leo) will happily try and steal an uncovered strawberry!
Oh, Leo does love gardening though!

Re: Gardening
I tell everyone I have a black thumb. I have never planted one thing that has lived more than about a week. LOL

Re: Gardening
Alright. I scrounged up a packet of pumpkin seeds that I bought last summer and hoping that they are still viable, planted them just now in an old plastic coffee can. I am eager to see if they germinate.
When I planted them last year, they never even grew. I had a sneaking suspicion that a crafty squirrel saw me and came around after I left, dug them up, and had a nice little snack.
I decided to out craft the squirrels and germinate the seeds indoors, and allow the seedlings to grow a bit before planting them outside.
Hopefully it'll work. Fingers crossed!!

Re: Gardening
I am an avid gardener and cannot wait for the snow to melt and spring to really hit, so my bulbs I planted last fall come up.
I don't have the room for a vegetable garden, but do have a small herb garden that I love. I also enjoy cooking, so it's nice to have fresh herbs on hand to whip up a marinade or whatever.
When I was first starting out with gardening, I seemed to have a black thumb too. Then my mom told me to stop loving my plants so much and ignore them a bit. She was right lol. I was overwatering my indoor plants and killing them pretty much. Out door gardens do need to be watered daily (full sun beds anyway), but I was going about it all wrong.

Re: Gardening
My Dad used to call my windowsill at home Death Row when I was a child!
My other half is fab with plants so now I can buy them and he looks after them for me.
