Default Meet Orlando

Went for a trip to Rhode Island today where all the great stores are and pet stores. We stopped at both Petco and Petsmart. I saw the cutest hamster at Petco, just a regular golden colors Syrian, so cute! I was really thinking about it.. so much thinking about it, but I decided to pass. I am just to fearful of dreaded wet tail and I noticed another in the cage that was on the wheel seemed to either be pooping or looked a bit blocked up.

Maybe I’m paranoid but I just couldn’t deal with wet tail again. So we went to petsmart, my husband Tom wanted to check out koi fish and of course I wanted to see the dwarf hamsters.

But I came across some gerbils and saw these two males in the cage that I though were very handsome, Well to make a long story short I decided to buy one. After all I had that empty bran new bin cage waiting for a critter to live in it!

So I bought another Silent spinner wheel another food bowl and an igloo and the gerbil. Iv had gerbils in the past in fact I even bred them and really enjoyed them. So I’m looking forward to owning one again.

Tom decided his name was Orlando after a characters name in a book he read. If I get into breeding them ill get a female and name her Sam after another character in this book my husband read.

Here are some pictures, they were hard to take, he kept moving! It was much harder then taking pictures of my roboroviskis pichu and macchu

A picture of the bin cage

He’s really pretty with a light cream-colored coat and a dark brown tail and light brown nose. Kind or remind me of a Siamese cat.

Default Gerbils

Hi Orlando! Don't you just have the most handsome enclosure there you lucky furball :P

Please don't take this the wrong way but I would always encourage anyone to buy a pair of gerbils as they are really quite social creatures - bit late advice to give now I know

I totally understand your concern over Wet Tail I hope one day you will be able to give a Syrian hamster another chance - maybe an older hamster will come your way...

I know I had thought of it, But I wasnt sure about having two of the same sex together for a long, I figured they mat start fighting and I wasnt sure how communal they were like some of the dwarf hamsters.

Plus I dont now how much room I'd have for more cages if it turned out I needed to seperate my robos and then two gerbils.

But I think It might be nice to get a female and breed sometime How can say :P

Default Gerbil paird

When I bred gerbils I had two boys (brothers) living together in one enclosure and then two sets of unrelated females living in two seperate tanks, and they had their babies quite happily with their cage mate still in with them, in fact the other girl would help out. I think I was quite lucky, but then they were obtained from a pretty serious breeder, and a great little family-run petshop in Berkshire, England which is sadly no longer there.

I love chickens - I remember begging for some as a youngster and getting 4 for my 8th birthday. My mum hoped for eggs but they were killed by a fox unfortunately a few days later. We got more later on (after the fox had been "removed" from the neighbourhood)

Hope to see their pictures soon

Chickens huh... to eat them? :P Id love to see picture of some fuzzy baby chicks so cute.

Its been a while since I had the gerbils, I was breeding them in late elementary school, At the time (I think) I was under the impression that only a male and female would get along together and never needed to be separated, but I really need to freshen my memory again with gerbil FAQ.

When I bred them the father always did a wonderful job helping to raise the young. Once they got a certain age I was separating the female and male pups into different cages and bringing them to a local pet store where I got 2 dollars for each one. It was more a hobby then a profit thing.

I thought about getting Orlando’s brother who looked just like him and asked the worker there about having same sexed gerbils together and she seemed to say there was a good chance they may might when they reach a certain age so I didn’t bother getting the other.

But I had so much fun breeding them, id like to maybe get into that again if I can find homes for the young when they are ready to go. I like to have that lined up before hand

Id really like to breed the Robos too.. btw.. babyboos have you checked out that topic Iv posted a few questions, I was under the impression you were experienced in breeding robo's?

Default Gerbils

Keeping a male and a female together will create a LOT of babies and I personally would discourage it, just as I would discourage keeping different sex dwarf or Chinese hamsters together, even if you do have a reliable outlet for the resultant little ones, you will put unnecessary strain on the female as she will have litter after litter after litter...

The only species which is less inclined to behave like this I have found is the Roborovski Dwarf, as they will have maybe three litters in a row but then nothing for up to a year. I keep both Roborovski Dwarves and Chinese in colonies, and in same sex pairs/groups. I would however not recommend colony breeding for the inexperienced, or without good breeder obtained stock.

I remember replying to your breeding post in the Roborovski Section Candace, is there something specific you want to know about? Sorry if there are still some questions there unanswered - I will go check again now. I do try and let others reply sometimes How is your hunt for an unrelated male going?

Ya I guess that’s all true, When I had my other gerbils I would separate the male and female to give the female a break from babies, But they always got along when brought back together.. I’m getting to far ahead of myself here lol, I really need to freshen up on my gerbil faq first before I decide to do anything more.

Theres a good gerbil site here http://www.gerbilsuk.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/index.htm it's UK based but has lots of good info and a popular forum. I really like gerbils too (although hams will always be my no.1!). I'd also have suggested keeping him with his brother though, they are social animals, there are always the ones that decide "they vont to be alone"(!) but that is just a consideration you have to take when you take them on, not really a reason to force them to be solitary.

He looks a very handsome boy - do you know what colour he is? I find gerbil colours even more confusing than hams.

I have no idea what color he’s called. As far as giving him a cage mate, well I believe it’s to late for that now... I should have gone with my instincts when I saw that a sign above the cage said they were social and liked to live in pairs. But I asked the employee and she seemed to think it was likely they would fight once they reached a certain age so I bought one. I don’t think they would get along if I just went and got another young male.

Even if I went back and one of his brothers was still there I think they may fight. Well I got a nice ball for him to run around in and plenty of cardboard to chew, and he likes to be handled, so Hopefully he will be happy
