There's a great YouTube video about it...

Just explain to them that you will do all the cleaning etc, and will save up yourself to get one. Tell them that as long as you clean them frequently they don't smell. Hamsters are very clean animals, in fact probably one of the cleanest. And show them lots of cute pics from HC! x

Like chinesehammy says, assure them that you're going to take full responsibility for a hamster and will be using your own money for food/bedding/toys etc. I think a lot of parents worry that they will end up saddled with the pet after a few months so try to make them see that's not the case..

Remember you'll need to find somewhere safe for your hamster! Curious dogs can be a danger, my dog is absolutely fascinated by my ferrets and it's taken a year for her to learn how to investigate them gently!

Just to provide more info(I'm Abbey's best friend in real life, not a stalker btw):
Abbey has 4 siblings. So her parents are busy and I guess they don't want more pets! They've heard about Colby Jack a lot, so that might help.

Maybe you could talk to them about getting you one as a B-day present?

As the above posters have said Also, whenever I used to ask my parents for something i'd get all the facts and everything that I needed and make a powerpoint. Like properly presented and all that. Generally that impressed them and they gave in so you could try that a different slide for things like - housing, cleaning behaviour etc. just a suggestion Hope they realise hamsters are really sweet and let you have one! Good luck

And her dogs won't be a problem as they aren't allowed upstairs.

Speaking as an adult, some parents may allow the hamster, but are they also willing to pay for a vet if one is ever required? Who (in the household) would fund this? I know this question comes up quite often, but it`s not just a case of getting a hamster, it the outlay as well and the funds required for any eventualities. Just throwing my own thought into the mix. x

This is a really really good point! Vet bills can get quite high if everything goes downhill, and you should really have a vet fund set aside if you know you normally wouldn't be able to just go out and see a vet and buy any required medication... Most pet insurance companies don't seem to insure hamsters from what I hear. Would your parents help you out in a struggle and can you afford a vet trip?

Maybe see if you can 'borrow' a hamster for a week or so, to prove that they are good pets?
