Abbey's mom loves animals, she's a vet! Which is confusing. But she can borrow Colby anytime!

A vet who thinks hamsters are filthy rodents?

Well that must cut down on diagnosis bills anyway! I think it's good to do what everyone's advised, but at the end of the day it is the parents' decision... Such a shame though! I hope she can convince them!

I think it's more her dad who's saying no. And her mom works with dogs I believe(probably why they have five)!

Thx for all the helpful info and maybe I will try again. Maybe I could "borrow" Colby and they could see how responsible I am, even though they know I'm responsible, and see that hamsters aren't as bad as they think. I have a lot of money saved up and would pay for everything even part of the vet bills if that's a problem, but I think I deserve it because my sister has 2 horses both being bored 1 for $200 the other for $450 and 1 of them is hurt and is having to have a lot of vet bills. I really think that it is so unreasonable that she has 2 horses a rabbit and a dog and she used to have a lizard, but they won't even let me have a hamster, partly because my dad had a bad experience with 2 of his getting inside their house walls when he was little and partly because the both think they are filthy rodents. I explained that I will get a cage that I'm positive he/she can't get out of and he/she won't smell bad at all because I will clean his/her cage every couple of days. OK, does anyone else think that I should get something more then my brother and sister for having all As on m report cards, like I've never had anything else other than an A? Sorry if that sounded like I was bragging but they are always bragging to other people that I have straight As but they never give me anything for it. I feel like a hamster would be a great treat. Thanks for all the helpful advice and hopefully I will be getting a hamster soon.

It might be a good idea to bite your tongue on this and wait a wee while. If you have other pets around, then I imagine they are great companions? Think also about your family lifestyle and if you go on holidays or might need to leave your pets with other people? I remember when I was young and my mother remarried and I had to give some of my pets away. Sometimes life just gets in the way and we never forget. So I know what it`s like to be denied pets or have to give them up and have no say in the matter. It`s very frustrating, but those around you don`t seem to want a hamster in the house. Their reasons do seem a little childish, but I`ll bet there are other reasons behind their thinking and not just saying they are vermin. To the uneducated, that will always be their answer to small furries. x

My personal grown up opinion is 5 doggies are more than enough pets for any household. Maybe this is why your parents saying no. I have 2 doggies and 1 hamster and even though I'd love to rescue another hamster I know it will be difficult for me in long run due to space and vet and housing costs etc. Hamsters are not that cheap to care for or at least my hamster is high maintenance
