Thumbs down Anyone else terrified of flying?

So I'm off on a city break with a few friends next week. Just four days to break up the January blues! I'm looking forward to it, but my fear of flying is ruining it!

I've flown since I was a child and for 12 years straight made transatlantic flights at least once a year, I've done euro trips flying from country to country etc, but every time a flight is coming up I spent weeks before it working myself up to the point I start to panic whenever I think about it. Just today, i was getting out my car at the train station when I had a wave of panic as I imagined the feeling of being on plane that was going down.

I have no reason to feel like this at all. If anyone else has the fear, how do you cope with it? Any tips?

I have flown. A number of times. I do not like it. I believe that if God wanted me to fly I would have wings. My mother loved flying and used to make me crazy when I flew with her. She'd be making all this noise looking out the window...in thunderstorms yet!...while I would be trying to ignore her. One time she was on the other side of the plane and I told her to make believe I wasn't with her. What I can tell you is that it really is true that you have a better chance of a car accident or a train wreck than any plane going down. (Comforting, isn't it? ) You'll be fine.

I absolutely love flying. But I do understand what you mean Clairealex. My sister is terrified, she has to take sleeping tablets whenever she is on a flight.

I however love it, I'd love to be cabin crew one day, but I need to sort out my very short temper and anger problems before I can do such a thing!

I am terrified of crossing roads now as I was hit by a car on New Years Day this year.

Transport is an odd thing!!

I'm 100% sure you will be fine.

I dislike it. But once you're up it's like being on a coach... Or so I tell myself.

Just to add something else, before I fly, in the week leading up to it, I always have dreams that I get on the plane naked, or I get on the plane and I've left my luggage at home!! The worst one is getting on the plane with bare feet!! Bare feet make me feel so ill!

I LOVE to fly. I'd live in an airport, just going back and forth on flights.... My family is a travel and food one, so I guess anyone would grow to like food and flying. I love getting up early, I am my best in the morning, so I like the flights that leave around five in the morning, then I stare out the window and am forced to leave. I like the feeling of landing and take off, it gets my heart racing and I like that. When I was little, like six, seven, eight etc, my dad would take me with him on trips for work. I looked forward to them for months. I turned nine in Phoenix, it was one of the best birthdays I remember.

And as for you, I was always told what DrKMcK said. You are MUCH more likely to have a crash in a car or train then on a plane(I think I just wrote a song, lol!).

And don't worry about it! I'm 100% positive that you'll be just fine.

I don't really like flying but when I do I keep a close eye on the air stewards. If they're looking relaxed then I'm happier. If I think it's a bit bumpy and they're not even asked to sit down I think it can't be that bad. If they thought they were going to die they wouldn't be happy. So, my tip is: watch the staff!

It's funny how everyone has such different flying experiences!!

DrKMcK - haha I do try to reason with myself by telling myself statistically I'm more likely to be in a train crash or car pile up but I still end up thinking 'people come out car and train crashes alone - few people have survived plane crashes'. It's so stupid and irrational but I don't know how to control it. It also annoys me when people are over excited about it haha. I was on a flight once from Lisbon to Amsterdam that had a bit of turbulence. Nothing bad, but every time it happened these two Portuguese air stewards were going 'woooooooooah' , pretending they were surfing then cracking up with each other. They were clearly having a bit of fun but I thought I was going to scream. It was terrifying me!

Iwasbornwright - I wish I could have your attitude! Fancy swapping it for a while?! like your sister, I now have to get pills to help me fly my doc gives me one diazepam tablet per flight but it's very low dosage, just to take the edge off. It doesn't really work though but I don't want to have any higher dosages. I don't want to have to take pills at all Its great you're not fazed at all by it. You should definitely look into working as part of a cabin crew

Jinja - I try to reason with myself but my brain doesn't let me forget where I am. Every time I start to relax that weird pressure changing thing happens or a little bit of shaking happens and then I'm all scared again. I also have a weird thing where I can't focus on anything whilst flying. So I can literally spend 9 hours on a flight just kind of looking about myself. I think it's a weird control thing. I want to feel aware at all times or something haha!

Colby - that's so great you're not scared either! It's lovely you have such nice memories of flying I don't have any bad ones at all - I've just always hated it! More so now than when I was younger. It's great hearing how much people love it though. It makes me want to appreciate it more!

Soapy - thank you for the tip! I do try to watch the staff. I've only had one flight when they were asked to take their seats before landing. We were going through a really turbulent patch as we were effectively flying in between a formed hurricane and a forming hurricane. Thought my heart was going to explode on that flight!! Generally it's nice seeing them wandering about with their trolly smiling whilst the plane is shaking. Have to remind myself it's probably nothing to them!!

I do love flying, but I must admit you begin to fear for your life more as you get older and it's worse now that I have a son because I worry about his safety too! If I get nervous I just think that although this flight is a big deal to me, and there's been a lot of build-up to it, it's just another everyday job to the crew. I imagine them hauling themselves in to work, going through the motions of the safety talk, the refreshment trolley, the duty free trolley, they have to clean up after us... and then do it all over again once we've left. I guess it's just putting the flight into perspective - a big deal to us but just mundane everyday stuff to others. Does that make any sense?
Hope you can relax and your flight goes smoothly
