I bite my nails too. I used to make my fingers really sore by biting my nails when I was a kid. Now I'm more strict with myself and I nibble them a bit but don't bite them really short, unless I'm quite stressed then I can't help it. I do sometimes have long nails but I can only managed that if I'm not stressed at all. I found that once my nails got a little longer I didn't want to bite them. At the moment they are quite short as I've been stressed by a few things and then I can't help biting them. Plus I do like biting them

When they were long painting them with normal nail varnish did stop me chewing on them because I didn't want to damage the nail varnish.

I hate having dirt under my nails too so I clean them with a nail brush if I've been doing anything grubby like gardening. I don't like cutting them with nail clippers because I don't like how that feels.

When I did stop biting them I had to use a lot of willpower plus it helped to have something to fiddle with as I usually bite my nails when I'm fidgety.

I bit my nails right up to high school, but at my high school we were allowed to chew gum in class so I started chewing gum constantly to distract myself from my nails. It worked and I didn't bite my nails for over a decade! Then I had some stresses in my life and I started again

My boyfriend is constantly telling me off for biting my nails! Most of the time I don't even notice that I'm doing it!! Having long nails isn't good for my job though cos they break and that hurts (I clean rooms in a hotel).

When I was younger my mum tried bribery, painting my nails and countless other things to try and get me to stop. I found that I just picked off the nail varnish and then carried on biting them. When I had braces I couldn't really bite them properly but it didn't get me.out of the habit of trying

I soon stopped when a bit of chewd up nail got stuck up in my gum between my gum and my tooth. I had to go to the dentist who had to slice my gum to hook it out.

Never bitten them since.

These are mine at the mo!

My DH has started biting his nails again, he bit them non stop until it got to the point that i could hear him over the noise of the tv! Then he started on his skin and his fingers would always be bleeding, i couldnt hold his hand because he had sore fingers.
So every time his hand went to his mouth i would slap it, it took a while be eventually he stopped, his nails grew lovely and strong and they made his hands look nice.

But now he's gone back to biting again!!
Arghhhh!!!!!

Nail bitting comes from anxiety... If you work on the anxiety, you might help the biting a lot... Breathing exercices, identify the object of discomfort, staying in the "here and now" can all help to lower the anxiety level...

That is true, but its also a habit and you have to break the habit.
