Might be volunteering/interning at a rescue!
So, as some of you know I was looking into rescuing a Longhaired Syrian from an air force base. Well, that didn't happen. Instead, I found this rescue located an hour and a half away from me, a no-kill small animal rescue, the only one of its kind in New Jersey.
I found them on CraigsList looking for Volunteers and Paid Interns. I shot them an email, seeing if I could volunteer/intern with them even though I live a little far away. The only problem is the distance and getting there. If only I already knew how to drive. *sigh* Well, I'm learning now.
I might just end up fostering, but that's okay. I've talked about fostering small animals with my mom some time ago, she says it's fine.

Re: Might be volunteering/interning at a rescue!
*gulp* Just got back from them. Here's what they said:
Quote:
Sounds GREAT ! We have a handful of small animals that need foster so we can launch construction - do you think you could handle 6-8 guinea pigs if we were to deliver a whole nice set up for them? (A 4-high riser guinea pig condo with housing for all of them, plus the fleece, piggie food and litter, litter-boxes, piggloos, etc? You would have them for about 10 weeks - and in that time, could help us advertise them by photographing them, writing blogs about their personalities, etc etc? Maybe you could come down just once a month or every other weekend to help out? We have a gas reimbursement for volunteers who come from a long distance as long as they put in 20 hours a month. If you can work out coming in for a few long days - we'll buy you gas to help with the drive - that might be incentive to help get you here?
When would you like to come first to meet with us? I'd love to sit down with you and see what kind of things you could work on from home!

6-8 piggies!? ...At least they didn't reject me. I have to talk to mom about this when she wakes up. (it's 2 AM here)

Re: Might be volunteering/interning at a rescue!
Yes, it does seem like a great chance to do something good. The last rescue group I tried to volunteer for rejected me due to the distance, so I'm quite happy about them willing to work with me.
If I do get to foster them, I might not have to worry about me falling for them, but my mom falling in love with them! She's always loved watching them in the pet stores. Though she just said, "I've never held one, so I might not like them anymore if I pick one up and it pees on me." XD
Anyways, mom just came back from walking the dogs. I didn't sleep at all, just thinking about those piggies all night. She says, as predicted, no to 6-8 piggies, but maybe to fostering like 2 or 3 of them.
Once she is more awake, I'll talk to her some more and I'll send out a reply later today.

Re: Might be volunteering/interning at a rescue!
Here's an update:
After much talk with the parents, I sent the rescue a reply. I told them that 6-8 piggies is too many for us, who have no experience with them. And that we think we are not ready or prepared to take them on yet. However, I said if it had been 6-8 hamsters, I would have taken them on and if they ever get in any hamsters needing fostering, I'll foster them for the rescue.
The distance, an hour and a half, is still too much for my parents to drive me often, so it looks like a paid internship is out of the question. I did say, that I'd still meet with them to see if I could do anything at home for them.
And I just got a reply back from them. They said, that is fine and they do have a set up for 6-8 hamster tanks (they didn't say if they had any hamsters). And if I could come down friday, tomorrow, to see them.
I replied back that friday may work out, depending on the time. And I asked what time were they thinking of.

They got back to me with the times, but Mom bailed once she saw the Map Quest map, so I'm not going tomorrow.

Re: Might be volunteering/interning at a rescue!
Awww I'm really sorry I could tell how much you were looking forward to all this.
Hopefully you'll get some other oppurtunity in the future.
When I was younger I wanted to volunteer with animals and foster soooo bad but my mum said no and refused to drive me anywhere.
Now I'm much older I have set up my own little rescue, I'm about to start fostering for the RSPCA and will be volunteering once a week at a rabbit rescue.
So although you might feel a little down now just remember that in the future things will change and you'll have more animal rescue volunteering you'll be able to do
