Only people with access to the database can read them, even then it's a guarded secret amoung forum administrators as to where exactly to look for them. Reading PM's is highly discouraged, or at least it was on the admin forums I used to use and is usually only done when there is a serious problem (illegal activities etc).

If it wasn't for Kyrillion, Minnie would be living in a tiny (by this website's standard) cage with a wire shelf and a 5.5 inch wheel. The advice wasn't given after a specific question but when I was getting excited about getting a hamster. Some might have got offended, but I didn't. Some unasked for advice is needed. Even if someone gave me that advice now, I wouldn't get offended because I would know they were trying to help. Enough said

Somewhat random comment, but I think we should use hamster memes to express the emotions behind our comments

- when you are new the number of different sections to the forum can be daunting
- it isn't always obvious from a thread's title that the information you need might be in there
- the search function isn't always that helpful for basic questions. If you search on 'substrate' or 'Zoozone' for example your search term is likely to be rejected as coming up too often
I agree, it can take a little while to find your way around, especially if like me, this forum was your first, so everything is unfamiliar! Also, I think new joiners are keen to interact with other members, and asking things (even basic ones) gets a conversation going with others, which makes them feel welcome. I know I'm not around as much as I used to be, but when I do check in, if I know there was a good thread about a topic, or it is in the wiki, I'd try to make a friendly comment and link the thread as a suggestion - most new members would see by this that a lot of info can be gained by looking at old threads, but they still get to interact as they are finding their way around. Plus, I don't mind repeating myself if I have any advice to give, as I appreciate the times other members have helped me.

Ah I'm glad this is cleared up, now I won't feel bad for recommending the Hamster Wiki, though I was referring to when the person isn't new and has been around for a while. If it was someone's first post, or they had let's say less than 50 posts I wouldn't just say that they use the search engine.

Also I think it would help a lot if new members were encouraged to show their location country-wise, so that a user won't post a small novel on European cages just for the question asker to say after 'but I live in the US/Canada, where can I get these cages?'

I think it's always good to link to sites as well as answer the question - someone asks if they can feed their ham xyz, you say yes/no and link to the HC Wiki safe food page to give them more ideas
