Default Fancy Dress

I've got a children's fancy dress party to go in July and i'm not sure what to go as.
I don't want to buy a full costume, i would rather use something i have and just accessorise. I don't like spending a lot on fancy dress as i properly wont use it again. Also because the party is for twins so i have to buy presents for them too
I have a white and black poka dot dress (its a tea dress style) i would like to do something with this. I have thought about buying a mad hatter type hat to go with it, or a cocktail hat on a headband. I have also thought about 1950's rock and roll look. However i'm not sure what to add to it to make it look 1950's.

I don't have to use the dress, it was just an idea.

If anyone has any other ideas let me know

hmm a black and white polka dot dress is pretty hard to use I'd imagine. But fancy dress doesn't have to mean buying an expensive costume, I had to dress up once for world book day, I didn't really have anything so I though of someone I could easily copy and get stuff for which if needs be I could use again. I decided on Minnie the Minx from the Beano, as I had a friend borrowed me a black skirt, which I just folded and pinned up to make it shorter, I borrowed a beret of my brother, boots I already had and I got a black and red stripey sweater off ebay for £4. That was the only thing I had to buy so I got a fancy dress costume for £4 basically. Ebay is your friend here. You can also get some pretty cheap actual costumes on it, I bought a Xmas tree one for my Mum for work for about £10. Try and think of something you already have which looks quite like 'so and so's' and work with it, as it will keep the cost down for you if you already have 'half' of the outfit. For instance, if I ever need to do fancy dress again, I'd go as Daphne from Scooby Doo as I already have a purple dress and pink boots, so all I'd need to look for is a green scarf. Not only will it make it cheaper, it's less stuff for you to find as well! Finally try and think of someone you really like or would like to be (perhaps a fave tv/book character) as you may find you have something that resembles them already as you bought it for the fact it looked like something you fave character/person would wear. I know subconciously I tend to be more likely to buy something if it looks like what my fave characters/ singers/actors wears. Whoever you eventually decide to choose, good luck with finding your costume

Fancy Dress is more fun when you put it together yourself I think. Charity shops are a gold mine. I have a few pieces for a sherlock holmes type one if I ever go to a party and I got the hat and magnifying glass in charity shops and a coat in the sale at primark. me and my friend put a entire halloween show together with stuff from charity shops.x

Thanks for the ideas guys.
I think i can make the polka dot dress work as a 1950's rock and roll style. I've had a look on ebay and managed to find a scarf and rock and roll glasses for around £5. Just got to decided what colour i want, red or black? I've also had a look on you tube for hair and makeup tutorials for the 1950's look. Fingers crossed it will look good.
Now i've just got to try and find a gift for 1 year old twins

I know she normally wear a red polka dot dress but I have seen other colours so how about Minnie Mouse? Get some ears, a bow and a tail and paint some whiskers on your cheeks. I'm sure the twins would like that

For 1 year old twins girls, I'd go with clothes or something decorative. I don't know if you do cross stitch or would have time to do them, but a cross stitched picture for each with minnie mouse & their name would be super cute! I'd probably think of doing that & end up with a cute yet practical outfit for each from somewhere the mum can get to & change if the size isn't right or she's already got it
