Default Brother might be diabetic. :'(

My older brother might be diabetic. His blood sugar is very out of wack and he feels tired a lot. He goes back to the doctor for more tests soon. I am now thinking of him a lot and hope that he is going to be okay. Our grandpa had diabetes and died from it, after loosing the use of his legs. I am scared for my brother.

*Hugs* I hope everything turns out fine for him and that it turns out not to be diabetes.
My Dad has it (and I think my Granddad does too) and he is also obese which makes things a little worse but as long as he keeps taking his medication and does what the doctor says he will be fine. Medication for diabetics is so much better than it used to be, if he does have it keeping his blood sugars level could be as easy as eating properly and taking a couple of tablets each day, it doesn't tend to make life any more difficult. Even taking the insulin shots doesn't usually interfear with everyday life for those who need that kind of treatment. He would also only risk losing the use of limbs if he doesn't keep an eye on what he eats, it can be so difficult to say no to some foods but its just something that people with diabetes have to do. My dad eats too much of the wrong stuff at the moment and I am always having to have a go at him for it but some days you just get weak for the foods you shouldn't.

Basically hun, if worst comes to and he does have diabetes it doesn't mean his life has to change too much or that he will definitely suffer at all, it also doesn't necessarily mean that he won't live to an old age (my granddad is over 70 now and my dad almost 50). Just offer as much support and encouragement as you can which I know you would anyway.

*More hugs*

I'm diabetic and it really isn't that big a deal It just takes a bit of management regarding what foods to eat and remembering to take meds etc.
I wasn't happy when I first found out as I thought my life as I knew it would surely be ruined! But after a few months' adjustment I felt so much better that I ended up being quite glad it had been picked up when it was.
I had put on a lot of weight before diagnosis, in the 2 years since then i have lost 56lbs and have a lot more energy.

If your bro is diabetic, managing his diet and keeping his blood sugars as close to normal as possible will stave off possible complications. Losing limbs and going blind etc are down to bad management of the condition, in the old days when people didn't have the means to test their blood, complications were almost inevitable but that doesn't have to be the case now.

My Grampie was a diabetic. He had to prick his finger with this needle machine thing and check his sugar levels every day using his blood. He also has to give himself insulin injections. I don't think it bothered him too much. If his blood sugar levels were too low, he ate chocolate

I've been diabetic for the past fifteen years. At my doctors if you're type 2 you don't have to check your blood sugar. They prefer a yearly blood test. Type 1 is of course a lot more serious. I don't have a sweet tooth so I'm lucky. Its not so bad.

My mother, aunt, and grandfather (before he passed from unrelated issues) are diabetic. It does scare me a little because I know it makes me far more likely to become diabetic down the line. My mother barely struggles with it at all. She lost some weight after diagnosis and she has already brought her HA1C down significantly. When she was first diagnosed, she was supposed to test her blood sugar before and after every meal but now she only has to do it if she feels funny. She takes medication twice a day. As long as your brother takes his meds and watches his diet, it's very manageable. Hugs to you guys! xx
