Default Feel silly now ...

I just had a panick attack. I've only ever had them a couple of times before. Usually I get them when I'm doing something that triggers a memory - usually a scary memory. But this evening I was very relaxed and watching a film so I've no idea what caused it, and that makes me feel really stupid! I got told to mention it to the doctor next time I'm there but I think the doctor will make me feel stupid if I say that I have no idea what caused it ...

Panic attacks, whatever the cause, even if there isn't an obvious one, aren't stupid. I had a major one a few years ago, ending up with the college I was at calling 999. Still have no idea what set it off to this day, 5 or so years later.

The doc won't think you're stupid either and if s/he does you need a new doc!

I agree. A few reasons why i'm depressed seem really stupid to me and I was worried my doctor would think i'm being, well, stupid! However, he is a lovely man and listened to all my problems without judging me.

I'm glad you are okay. I have only had a panic attack once and it was a very horrible experience!

Totally agree with starlightSerenity, panic attacks are very unpleasant and are often there is no rhyme or reason to having one. The fear is often out of proprtion to the event and can make you feel phicslly ill! you have an iPod there is a great guy called Andrew Johnson and he does the most amazing relax apps. He has a few and I'm pretty sure he has one for anxiety and panic attack. I personally love the relax app.
I also agree that you need a new Dr if he's going to make you feel stupid! You are not stupid!

I didn't mean the panick attack was making me feel stupid, only the fact that I've no idea what caused it especially as I was watching a movie!

Actually I do feel silly a bit as the other people in my house now won't finish watching the movie so I've no idea what the ending is!

Do not feel stupid. They're not a laughing matter.

I suffer from severe anxiety so I have had a few panic attacks in my life. Some were triggered by obvious circumstances (general admission concert, crammed into the 3rd row, in a very hot and small club) and some not obvious at all (lying in bed watching TV.) I had one so badly a couple years ago that I ended up in the emergency room.

So don't ever worry about being judged or anything like that. People whose opinions really matter won't think you're being stupid, silly, or anything like that. I think you should always talk about it before it gets worse!

Hi Pinkneon... Panic attacks are strange things.. Sometimes there is an event which leads to them but also there are some where you are gripped with an overwhelming fear and anxiety with no conscious direct cause or event! They are really horrible debilitating events!
There are some really good sites that help you deal with this.. Cognitive behavioural therapy can be very useful also.
