Re: Pet shop hamsters? Whats the problam?
Van Diemen - I fully agree with the idea of educating people. The problem is that it alone probably still won't be enough and it relies on people like the RSPCA bothering to fix the problems. Apparently they actually talk to some stores about animal care so to be blunt - they clearly don't give a damn.
I feel that not buying from pet stores is another small thing we can do to discourage the idea while we attempt to educate. There're no rules saying only one approach at a time will work are there?

That's a bit of a silly statement to make I only came to my current opinion by debates, that's part of how opinions form

Re: Pet shop hamsters? Whats the problam?
Awh man people are quoting me - how can I not respond lol
I guess I just feel that perhaps here isn't the right place for it.
Education is what is needed but not a debate. I've been pushy with my opinion and so have others. People browsing and looking to join here could be thrown off by so many passionate people lol.
I just strongly feel that people like the RSPCA should be doing this - not us.
Obviously I think it's great people are getting into it and sharing ideas and opinions - but at some point it can turn into an argument and people could be left feeling as though they've been attacked.
If the RSPCA and other organisations like it did their jobs properly - there would be mass media campaigns about it which let people make their own minds up rather than attempting to change peoples views with force. < Force isn't really what I mean but I can't think of a better word lol.
I just think arguing the point is a bit silly because it can really put people on the defensive which can cement their views in place more solidly.
If you want change - it need to be done with advertising that doesn't pressure people, but makes them think.
I'm done!! lol

I think the RSPCA have enough on their plates. It wasn't the RSPCA that stopped (or greatly reduced, I've never seen any) the sale of puppies in pet stores. It's not the RSPCA working to improve the lives of many, many rabbits (the Hutch is Not Enough campaign). Just a couple of examples. I don't think it should be down to one charity to do everything. Cos that's what they are - a charity. I'm kinda against the amount of legal powers the RSPCA has... But that's another discussion!
I disagree with you and think that it is our responsibilty as we're the ones who are against them.

I don't think anyone here is being pushy, forceful or agruing. Remember that you can't hear a persons tone of voice - it seems that you may have thought people are being more aggressive than they actually are We're all friends here At least I hope so I get fed up when people get accused of being nasty when they disagree with what someone else says. Can't we have a discussion about something without it turning it to how HC is going down hill? A HC break is probably in order for me.

Re: Pet shop hamsters? Whats the problam?
It may not be my place to say but my Russians are from a local pet shop and neither of them have any sort of problem but I know my friend did. But I also have a friend who had a breeder hamster who passed away after a few months. Not because of bad conditions, we don't know why.
I agree that it's all about education for rodent mills and people alike but I don't think you can say that all pet shops are evil.

Re: Pet shop hamsters? Whats the problam?
*shrugs*
I have no problem with people buying from pet stores. I've just been trying to explain why I avoid it in most circumstances. Somewhere I think the thread got sidetracked and went from why we do what we do to people saying "but this is what we should do" and thats not what it should be. Or even if its not its pages of the same people debating and I think its giving a bad impression.
I won't buy from them unless its to benefit a specific hamster already in my care for a reason that cannot wait. Like buying Muffin - Whizz was depressed and it would be months before we had any chance at getting another robo without a pet shop being involved. Most of the time I choose to avoid doing so but I have no issues with people buying from pet stores if they believe its ok. I personally believe its up to us to encourage change if we want it, but if people want to do their bit towards that is entirely their choice - as is how they do it.
I have to say though - Lately HC seems to be people parroting views too much. Its "no the cambridge isn't ok" "no buying from pet stores isn't ok" next it'll be "no feeding a hamster harry hamster isn't ok" or something. The entire forum'd benefit from being a bit more open minded really, and that does mean everyone on it.

More quoting! I cannot ignore lol.
I agree the RSPCA do have a lot on their plate, but I mean organisations like them. There are plenty of organisations out there - but none of them seem to be concentrating on small animals
Oh I know I don't personally feel i've been attacked but that is the unfortunate things about the internet. Without tone of voice some people could interpret it that way - I always think controversial issues like this should be kept to a minimum on the net for that very reason.
We are very lucky here though - everyone is so darn nice haha

I've noticed that too The only hamster organisation I know of is the NHC and they don't seem to have any involvement in the 'campaign for change' sort of stuff, not that thats a bad thing, they do a lot in the ethical breeder and show side of things.
I suppose it fits in with the disposable pets thing.

Re: Pet shop hamsters? Whats the problam?
I have read halfway through this thread and such... and the only point i would like to make is that even if you boycott buying animals from pet shops. Still buying supplies from them is still aiding it, and really what I think is that going to the RSPCA and putting pressure on such groups and make a change through government is the best thing and its just going to take time =/
And since theres lots of debating going on here, thats kind of the problem theres no 1 answer which means llines can be blurred.
-Also i'm staying neutral.
