I can't say anything against pet store hammies as mine ae from pet shops

And i know what everyone is saying about the hammie mills but its not the hammies fault it was born there and why should it be left on the shelf and grow old in the petshop for something thats not there fault.

I personally knowing that they could be born in hammie mills would take them before a breeder not cause i support it but because i know breeders will ensure their hammie goes to brillant homes were as the pet store doesn't care if the animal lives in a shoebox.

I hate pet stores that sell animals. I've said it time and time again - hamsters aren't packets of crisps and shouldn't be sold like packets of crisps.

Until people realise that the only way we are going to be able to stop rodent mills/farms is by not buying the animals that they produce, any other effort is just going to be wasted and they are going to continue.

Anyone here who thinks buying pet store hamsters is a good idea should read this and take a good hard look at the photographs in it - Why not use Pet Shops? Be warned, the photographs are upsetting.

All my hamsters in my many years of ham keeping, bar the last year have been from pet shops, so dont feel they are like the plague and must be avoided.

I would recommend breeder hamsters, as they are handled so much more, and their line is checked for health issues so you know you will get a healthy hamster.

I havent got a hamster from a rescue before, but I have heard many storys of how the hamsters have grown in personality and come out of their shell once they get home and settled.

I would get ww/rc from breeders as the health worries with hybrids is too much, robos and chinese dont have as many health issues, and those that they have are the same from either, so I get my chinese from pet shops normally, tho I would have a breeder one if I was going where there was some.

hope this helps!

Just wanted to say it's not the hamsters I have a problem with, it's the methods these people use to breed them. The conditions that they are kept in, the culling practices of these places and what have you.

It breaks my heart to know how these animals come into the world, what they go through at the start of their lives and how many of them end up in awful homes and it's makes me want to prevent more animals suffering the same fate.

Pet shop hamsters are bred in rodent mills. Thi9s is a wharehouse sized building with rows & rows of small tubs the hamsters are kept in.

They are never touched or handled as they have a feeding system & water system so they never come into contact with a human.

They are just put together to mate without knowing the history of them so do not know if there are any health problems from either hamster.

The females are bred back to back so as soon as one litter is taken away another male is put with them to mate again. This happens over & over again until the female dies.

This means for Syrians they can have poor health, & be scared of people touching them. There is also a increse risk of wet tail.

For Dwarf's this means they are hybrid dwarf hamsters. They also will be bred back to back until the female dies. Again they do not know if there are any health problems in either hamster which for dwarfs will be a high chance of them being diabetic. Also with the dwarfs they have a higher risk of being born with a lot of mental & physical health problems due to breeding two different species of hamster. They will also be scared of people

National Hamster Council breeders breed pedigree pure healthy hamsters who are not bred back to back, who have a list of there family history going back three matings so you kno there are no health problems. They are not scared of people because they are handled talked to & loved by the NHC breeders. They are also bred for temperment so you will get a friendly hammy

Vicki - Simple, by buying from the pet shop you support the idea of the horrible way those animals were bred. If you wait a while any unsold - at least in some stores, go up for rehoming instead. Then it becomes adoption rather than purchase, the animal gets a great home and the horrible way it was bred isn't supported by the person who homes it.

By buying pet shop hams all those of us who do/have done it (and I have too) just support the rodent mills. If we don't buy from pet shops we don't support the rodent mills and we help with a very slow movement that I hope will one day end the rodent mills. Puppy farms are a lot rarer now than they were and I believe/hope that if enough refuse to buy their animals from pet shops one day rodent mills will become a lot rarer too.

Not buying the pet shop hams doesn't do them an injustice as they will be homed eventually. In my view buying them does lots of hams an injustice as you effectively support the suffering happening in rodent mills and contribute to the suffering of hundreds of hamsters (and other rodents).

I didn't actually realize it was that bad I am totally against breeding animals for money as they have more to them than popping out babies although in saying that I am breeding my dog next year and then she will be spayed apparently it calms them down and better for their health.

That's actually made me feel like a nasty bit of work after seeing the way they live it's so unfair why do dogs and cats have so many rights but rodents don't?

Could we get a petition or something going to close these lot down?

I didn't mean to make you feel bad. We've all done it (well most of us) and there're loads of other things where animals suffer too.

I just meant to explain how I feel about it. I've got no problems with buying from them, just try to avoid it myself. Its probably better from a pet store than one of the backyard breeders in a way.

I'm not sure what can be done to stop it really. My only contribution so far has been deciding against supporting it when I can. Might be that it alone is enough one day.

Don't feel bad, when I was a kid all my hams came from pet stores, so did my rabbits and piggies too (and yup, I had rabbits and guinea pigs living together). I didn't know, but now I do, now you do, everyone who knows about these things can work to getting the info out there

Breeding isn't a bad thing, if you're breeding your dog for good reasons, know her genetic background and that of the male dog and what have you then go for it. I have to say, I wouldn't want to breed dogs - it's expeeeeensive with all the tests you have to do first.

I know what you mean about the dogs/cats verses rodents thing. I really do think it's because animals like hams don't live very long, people see them as disposable and don't care.
