Nope its perfectly fine to handle them pretty much the first day that are born, so long as the parents are fairly tame and use to being handled themselves and know your scent. Of ocurse at such a young age one should keep pups away from the nest longer then 10 minutes and I only check on then briefly. This one pups was only away from the nest for about 2 minutes at most.

Im not sure if its the same as hamsters, but some breeders recomend it, its gets them use the feeling of being picked up by a human hand and it helps get them really tame if you handle them allot. Once they get older of course Ill be able to handle them longer ect...

I usually play around with the bedding a bit just to get their scent on my hand before touching them if I do..

With hamsters I think it's pretty common for the mother to cannibalise the young if they are threatened, even tame hamsters can become quite protective when they become mums, so people don't handle the young until they venture out themselves. Then of course more handling = tamer but they just don't start quite so young.

maybe is has something to do with them not being social? at lest thats how it is with the syrians. Gerbils are social and the father and even older sybling will help care for the young, so maybe they are a bit more accepting that way?

Maybe....I wonder how it is with social hamster species. I just looked up on the NGS site and it said it is very rare for gerbils to cannibalise their young at all - although nursing/expecting females may harm other female's litters so it's not advisable to keep breeding trios.

It's interestering I don't know much at all about gerbils apart from the basics. I had some for a short while when I was younger.

Here some new pictures!! Oh how they grow so fast hehe..

Day Nine... 3Burmese and 5 Siamese

A Siamese and Burmese comparison.

They really look great! They have that soft velvety fur and their eyelids are clearly defined, they have nice long whiskers and are very squirmy and active!

I cleaned the cage this weekend. The parents seem to really be taking well to my meddling around in the cage and handling the pups. Orlando my male is a little nippy, he gets right close to my hand and kind or nips it, not a bite, its very gentle but I try and be careful not to upset him to much. I don’t want to get a hard nip hehe.

Iv updated my webpage also with the new pics

I sexed them all today using the nipple method, I dont know how accurate it is but it was very easy to tell the ones that clearly had fur missing around the nipple areas from the ones that didn’t so Im pretty sure it was accurate enough.

Anyway it looks as though we have...

~two Female Burmese

~one Male Burmese

~two Female Siamese

~three Male Siamese
