goodbye teddy <3
so my boy teddy seems to have passed away. he wasn’t responsive when i put food in the cage. i tapped by his head and moved the bedding. he didn’t move. i shook stuff around with one of his paper towel rolls and he didn’t respond. he’s just laying at the bottom of his bed. i gently tapped him with the roll and he didn’t move. i’m leaving him overnight to see, and i’ll see if any of the food is gone.
i’m not too upset as i had him less than a year and we never quite bonded as he hated being touched or picked up or anything.
what should i do now though? in terms of his stuff and his body?

Re: goodbye teddy <3
Did you not touch him to check if he was warm or cold? Are his eyes open or closed? I read that they can go into some hibernating state if they get very cold. Is he in a warm room?
Your reaction is most unusual. There's no way that i could go to sleep knowing that one of my hamsters is lying dead in his cage.
Hamsters live only for a short time so i have thought about what i'd do once they die. I'd bury them somewhere beautiful in the wilds, in a favourite hide or with a favourite toy.
As for your hamster's belongings, that depends on whether you'd want to get another hamster or not. You'd need to clean and disinfect everything reusable anyway and then keep it for another hamster or donate it to a hamster rescue or try and sell it if you want the money.

Re: goodbye teddy <3
it’s not that i don’t care. i left him because i wanted to make sure he wasn’t hibernating. i’m about to go take him and out and such. there is nowhere for us to bury him. there is a vet across the street so we might take him to get cremated.

Re: goodbye teddy <3
I also find your extremely matter-of-fact reaction to this situation quite unusual. I'm not judging but it's not how I would react that's all.
If he is dead he will be cold and stiff. If he is hibernating he won't be stiff.
They are extremely sensitive to temperature changes and tend to retreat to their nests as soon as the tempetature drops.

Re: goodbye teddy <3
i just never bonded with him and that makes me sad but im not heartbroken. he was cold and stiff when i took him out. we took him to the vet and got him cremated. it didn't feel right just throwing him in the trash or something and there was nowhere we could bury him.
he is gone now but forever in my heart <3

I'm sorry to hear of little Teddy's passing. It's a shame you never got the chance to bond with him and share happier memories.
